Doctor Who
Sep. 4th, 2007 12:32 pmThis is when you're bored, not really much else to do.
It's long, but there's pictures!
“Rose”

The whole scene when they’re walking and then Nine gives his wonderful speech and walks off. My adoration of the speech, I’ve already gushed about, but what I love about their little walk is that the dialogue is nothing spectacular, the natural chemistry between the two just knocked me for a loop. And I’ve talked about this before, I know, but it’s just not something I had ever seen before, and I think it may be the difference between some British shows and most American shows? I can’t say for certain, even though I have become a little more familiar with British shows and I have seen, obviously, too many American shows. But the easiness between the two, how natural it was to have Nine take Rose’s hand during his speech, for such a tiny thing, it sort of blew me away.
“The End of the World”

Those of you who know me, know that this is still one of my favorite episodes. And my absolute favorite scene has to be this one. The soft piano music as the Earth blows up, gets me every time and Rose lamenting that “nobody saw it go”. And Nine gets to take her hand and shows her what he’ll never see again: home. And it’s just such a beautiful scene, that I probably love it more than the end of this episode.
“Dalek”

*gasp* I have a favorite scene from this one? It’s more…a scene I can never forget, and as most of you have rightfully guessed, it’s when Nine sees the Dalek for the first time. I’ve never been more impressed with an actor. For giving me chills at expressing his appropriate rage at this…thing. This is when I appreciated Chris Eccleston, this is when Nine scared the crap out of me and feel for him at the same time. Because as much as he just changed and didn’t seem like my Doctor anymore, I couldn’t help but hope that this Dalek would be decimated for causing this pain in him because oh, boy, was the anguish just pouring off of him. It hurts to watch the scene and yet I can’t because we finally see him as truly broken… and he couldn’t look more human. And that’s what interests me about the Doctor. Because he has these terrifyingly human emotions and yet…he still doesn’t understand us?
Sorry, that’s a point for another time. :D
“The Long Game”

Heh, I have such an irrational love for this episode. I adored Suki and I love this scene because she doesn’t even ask for a hug, he just gives it up. “I’ll hug anyone.” Yes please!
“The Doctor Dances”

I have to say that when Rose encourages the Doctor to dance with her, shortly before they’re rescued by Captain Jack, is my favorite here. It’s hard to believe that she never believed him capable of being a sexual being, but her teasing is just so cute and Nine’s all cute being flustered, but then he takes the upper hand when he comes down and gets her all flustered and looking damned sexy. Ahem.
“The Parting of the Ways”

I have two:
1. Rose’s speech about it being a better life. It was a wonderful like speech, trying to get her mother and Mickey to just understand. It’s a wonderful Rose moment, and I missed those sorely in S2. I could go off into a rant of some sort, but I won’t because this is a happy post. :D
2. This one more obvious: The end. Before he regenerates obviously.
“You were fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. And d’you know what? So was I!” *sobs*
“The Christmas Invasion”

It’s completely cheesy, and I know y’all aren’t expecting this out of me, but I love the ending. I’m still pissed at Ten for what he did to Harriet, but him and Rose getting all tongue-tied because they weren’t sure if the other wanted them to keep traveling is just cute. And it gave me hope the first time I saw it. *still sticking to happy thoughts*
“School Reunion”

The scene where Rose confronts Ten about his past companions, I both love and hate. It’s one of David Tennant’s better moments in S2, so that’s a plus. And ultimately, I love it because it made me realize why he’s a selfish asshole. He’s afraid to be hurt.
And I hate this moment as well because it doesn’t work well for me. It feels out of place because it sounds like something Nine would say. I’d expect the Doctor to be at a better place by now and to hear his speech here, about wanting to spare himself the pain of losing someone, he’s not at a good place. Which makes me think that all that talk about Rose healing him are not completely accurate. And I’m okay thinking that. People have made the comparisons that Rose was just the band-aid, which helps a wound, but doesn’t heal it, and I think that fits.
But then, that’s my own interpretation.
And the reason I hate it is why I like it, because it feels like this shouldn’t be how he’s feeling, but it is. Like I said, now, in hindsight, it makes sense for Ten. And displays one of my biggest problems with him.
And I adore the goodbye scene between Sarah Jane and the Doctor.
“The Girl in the Fireplace”

The conversation between Madame de Pompadour and Rose. I love seeing Rose’s head on straight, knowing what’s at stake here, and trying to be as calming and understanding as possible. And I like that moment when Reinette walks onto the space station. It’s a great scene for both.
“The Impossible Planet”

Again, two scenes:
1. Surprisingly, the mortgage scene. For many reasons. One, I think this was blown out of proportion. And two, I think it shows that the two aren’t necessarily in the same place. I sincerely think Rose is trying to keep up positive thoughts and is trying to tease the Doctor because he’s obviously uncomfortable with the idea of settling down. And when she suggests they share, I think it’s a very innocent suggestion, considering how she tries and backtrack immediately because she pressed on something she maybe should have left alone. It’s not a particularly shippy scene IMO because the Doctor’s so obviously uncomfortable with not only the idea of settling down, but of settling down with someone. In this case, Rose. And I like that they show Ten like that. That’s he’s not totally over “no domestics”.
2. When they go into the cavern (the Doctor and Ida). It’s beautiful and gorgeous.
“Army of Ghosts”

The scene where Jackie kisses Ten is gold. I’m sorry, I just love it.
“Doomsday”

It’s a tiny glimpse, not even really the scene, the look Ten gets when he first hears that it’s Daleks that are back, it sort of broke my heart a bit. Granted, I’m pissed at RTD for constantly bringing them back because it tears apart S1, but I digress.
“Gridlock”

Do I even need to list my favorite scene from here? Obviously the very end, when Martha sits and gets the Doctor to talk to her. I love that as soon as she sits, he relents. He wants to talk. He wants to let it all out and here it is. And it broke my heart to hear him say that he felt he could pretend that he didn’t lose it all. That his planet wasn’t gone and his people dead. It was such a beautiful scene. And it almost made me cry!
“The Lazarus Experiment”

Sorry, but if there’s one thing they got right in S3, it was the ending of their episodes. And I loved this one. Martha finally speaking up and saying HEY, I’m either there or I’m not. And if I’m not, then SEE YA. And the Doctor fesses up that of course she was never just a passenger. Lovely.
“42”

The look of absolute awe on Martha’s face when she gets a key. I love how much she seems to understand how much everything means to him. That the TARDIS is everything to him and that he’s touchy about companions now.
This is cheating, but I really liked how Ten seemed to lean and rely on Martha when his body is overtaken, or whatever. Like when they get him to the infirmary and Martha steps away and he calls her name. He trusts her a lot, and it showed really well here.
Hmm…I really loved the episodes “Human Nature”, “Family of Blood” and “Blink”, but I can’t really think of individual scenes that particularly stood out to me as favorites.
“Utopia”

When the watch is opened. So awesome, again, the ending here, or the last 10-15 minutes or whatever, rocked my socks off. I mean, there’s really nothing to explain here, yeah?
“The Last of the Time Lords”

It was sad that we had to say goodbye to Martha, but looking back at it, I liked that she walked away. Nothing will ever be more important to me than my family, my mom and dad and sister, so the fact that she so recognized that she needed to be there, I’ll always respect her for that. And I know some, or most, I don’t know, people didn’t like that she came back and gave that speech about her friend and the boyfriend, but I understood that. It’s why I so strongly identified with Martha, because I’ve had strong crushes on guys that 1) didn’t deserve it and 2) didn’t like me back.
And I think part of why I like Martha telling him this is because he needs to understand that the excuse of being alien isn’t always gonna cut it. And I’m not gonna buy it. He feels like a human, he’s been around them long enough, he knows. He has to understand that people notice how you behave and act and you know what? There are people who will call you on your shit. So bah, you just lost another companion.
And again, cheating, as it’s not a scene, but how awesome was Martha in the year that wasn‘t? Traveling the, basically, war-torn world for a year, alone. If that can’t be appreciated, then someone’s watching a different show. The strength of that, and I don’t care right now about the reason she did that, the fact that she was able to, and did it so well. And even though she told the story about the Doctor, those people talked about Martha, Martha was the legend and the people trusted her words. For all we know, they may have been calling out to the Doctor, but could have been thinking of Martha.
And that the Doctor knew that she could do it? He knows how good she is.
Did...any of that make sense?

Totally. They may have been calling out to the Doctor, but they were doing it beause they had faith in Martha - they trusted that she knew how to defeat the Master.

Yes! It took a little reflection to actually see that, but now it's all right there, and I kind of love it.

Date: 2007-09-04 09:52 pm (UTC)When Jackie kisses Ten is one of my all-time Doctor Who moments, especially when you include the face he pulls after she's done it.
Also tired of the Daleks. They're great villains and all, but really? Kinda had enough. I was incredibly disapointed to see him in series 3, because it's just cheapening all of the sacrifices they all keep making (though Ten's line about losing everything while they keep bouncing back in the series 3 two parter *was* a good one).

Gah, the Daleks. I will not shed a tear if we never see them again.
Please say no?

Date: 2007-09-06 12:13 am (UTC)Do you mind if I ask where you thought those spots were? I'm curious, technically, because I was rather taken aback by the sustained intensity of that entire sequence - there were places where he was modulating like crazy, but I felt it carrying through relentlessly.
As I say, just curious where you thought that was happening.

Date: 2007-09-06 12:09 am (UTC)That opening walk-and-talk in "Rose" knocked me sideways, and I know both British and American shows, plus loads of films, but I have never seen chemistry like that. It was both very sexy and very...easy. Intimate and sweet, knowing but not showy or inappropriate.
Dalek - I completely agree, an emotional and technical tour de force. I see no weakness in it at all, in fact I remember distinctly being a little uncomfortable that it was as raw and intense as it was. I was loving it, but I could see it terrifying the tots.
And the Long Game...weak episode plotwise, but brimming with fantastic chemistry between Nine and Rose, and Nine and Suki, and well, Nine and everyone except for the limp, not-very-pretty Adam.
TDD: well, what is there left to say - perfect scene. And pretty much the same for POTW. For me, though, it's the hologram scene. That one kills me every single time.
School Reunion - my favourite scene (probably my favourite Ten scene of all) is the goodbye between Ten and SJS. Fanboy works for him. But this push-pull that Ten has going on, I'm not terribly fond of, more because he's not really being honest with others. He comes closest here, but you know how I feel about that...
I highly approve of the Rose-Reinette scene - next to Jackie's "left behind" speech in L&M, the best scene in S2, IMO.
Re: S3 - With Martha's leaving, there's just one thing that would make me feel better about the way it was handled. I do think she should have left, and I admire that she got herself together to do it. But when she said, "And I am that good," could he just have said "Quite right, too?" It needn't change anything else, but it would have been a terrific echo.
And...that's probably enough in one post!

Date: 2007-09-06 01:02 am (UTC)Same thing with the goodbye scene with Ten and SJ, forgot tell the last minute.
Damnit, I suppose the fact that I've sort of purged the episode of "Love & Monsters" from my head, I missed the Jackie speech, which was just fantastic.
Oh, I completely agree with the Martha leaving scene, I was a bit miffed that Ten didn't say anything about agree with her sentiment of being that good, although, he was nodding his head when she said it, yes?
