Screencap Review
May. 6th, 2006 02:30 pmBecause I have seen them all over LJ, and because they are so fun to look at and make, I thought I would start screencap reviews! This one is for Doctor Who's "The Empty Child". Loads of pictures so it's not dial-up friendly.
May include references to "The Doctor Dances" so beware if you haven't seen the next episode. And minor series two spoilers.
Enjoy!
All screencaps from Stakes and Stones Screencaps.
I really like this episode, partnered with "The Doctor Dances", it's one of the best. But I have a sort of problem with the writer. He doesn't seem to be in the know of other episodes so much. These don't seem like the episodes you would expect to follow "Father's Day". And he admitted that series two minor spoiler he didn't know how Rose treated Mickey at the end of "School Reunion" which is why she's so nice to him in "The Girl in the Fireplace". But, I don't really care. These episodes are so well done, that I really have no room to complain.

Mildly inappropriate, and funny. I think the opening is very cute actually, with the no harm, well, reasonably no harm, of chasing the ambulence.

While Rose comtemplates herboobs t-shirt, I wonder if it's the shirt she should be worried about or the large amount of BRIGHT RED. I don't know, you tell me. I think this is where my grip with the writer really is, because I don't think the Doctor would just trust that she wouldn't wonder off. Not that he wouldn't trust her, but I think he would just be keeping an extra eye on her, instead he gets into the building and tells her to follow if she's going in.

I like this scene because the Doctor finally figures out where he is, and it tells me that my dad is pretty damn smart. The first time he watched this, last night, he figured out the date because of the music and clothes. I also liked everyone laughing at the Doctor. Not that I like the Doctor being laughed at, it just reminds him that he should really know where he's at, at all times.

He's so cute! I laughed when he figured out when they were because you know what he was thinking, and it wasn't "I should have found a newspaper"

How cute that he picked up the cat. Since I know almost nothing of the old series, can someone tell me if the Doctor ever had a cat on board the TARDIS?

I've loved the Ninth Doctor since I first saw him onscreen, but I didn't fall for him until this two-parter. His reactions were all funny, and with a couple heartbreaking. And here, with the awkwardness of picking up the phone, I just laughed. It was funny and confused.

PEEPING TOM! Not really, but for a man that doesn't do domestic or family, he sure loves to watch (um...yeah). Which is a contrast to "Father's Day". Or maybe he thought the man's comment about the German's never eating funny.

Oh yeah, Rose in trouble. It's her own fault. Who climbs on a rope that you have no idea where it leads to or where it's attached?

Ah, Captain Jack Harkness. I don't see Tom Cruise. When I first saw this, I thought "What a cheesy shot" and then he slapped Algy's ass. I liked that, he made it fun.

Attractive man who saved my life and is handsome, yes I would be smitten upon sight as well. I know that a lot of people are torn over Rose's actions in this two-parter, but I don't see it. Like she tells the Doctor in "The Doctor Dances", Jack is like the Doctor, but no dating, which is kinda true from her viewpoint, he hasn't dated anyone (he flirted with Jabe, but that was so soon after she met him, that I don't think she considers that serious now) and no dancing, which at that point I think she actually meant dancing because she remembered dancing with Jack. It was the Doctor that used dancing as a metaphor. And when Rose gets confirmation that the Doctor does dance, the first thing she wants to do is dance with the Doctor.
I don't really know what my point was, but I know some people didn't like Rose in these two episodes and the only time I didn't like her is when she was stupid and climbed that rope. And acted like a ditz around Jack.

I love the look the Doctor gets when he realizes what Nancy does. It's like this pure admiration(or not, I've heard otherwise) and it's perfect. For being a "higher being" and refering to humans as "stupid apes" he really does admire the human race and adores them, which is why he wants to save us all the time. I think.

I love this shot. It's just so creepy and right.

I love her awe in this scene. She's still so new to all this and the audience is constantly reminded of that. I like it.

"Do your ears have special powers too?" Favorite exchange in the whole episode.

Remember what I said about the Doctor's reactions? He's like "The Doctor? Doctor who?" Yeah yeah, still the lamest joke ever. But you know he's thinking it!

That just doesn't look comfortable. And neither does this:

How he's holding her hand. I think the dancing would have been better and more romantic if it didn't look so uncomfortable. Is it just me?

Why does he look so hot here? Tell me please.

Is Rose happy or apprehensive? Oh, it's so the ladder. And why all the obsession over Spock?

Poor confused Doctor.

I never noticed the same poses in the episode. Must watch again. *sigh* What a chore. I think it's funny that as soon as they're all in the same room, she immediately sides with the Doctor. She knows where her loyalties lie.

"I'm a conman." I don't know if it's the line or the delivery, I didn't like it. It felt forced and stupid, like we didn't get the point already?

"Flag girl" He checks her out, so...

She checks him out. "U-boat captain." I also like his reaction, it's like this mixture of piss-off, offended and "What?! The fuck?!"

Not Nancy! She hasn't even met Rose yet! Which should mean she doesn't die yet! Yeah, still lame, sorry.

Somebody caption this for me. Their expressions don't mesh, so tell me. What are they thinking?
And a cap from next week:

He cannot be this hot. Seriously. But this is why the 9th Doctor is not asexual. You cannot resist a man when he looks at you like that!

Date: 2006-05-18 03:41 pm (UTC)Part of the reason why the dancing looks so uncomfortable is that fact that he's like 8 inches taller then she is. It probably wasn't as uncomfortable as it looked, though I can't tell you for sure cause at 5'10" I'm lucky if I can find a dance partner with more then 3 inches on me.

Date: 2006-05-18 03:45 pm (UTC)I can see it. But I didn't like people comparing him to Tom Cruise and then automatically didn't like him.

Date: 2006-05-18 04:46 pm (UTC)I believe you are right. I'm curious now, how tall is Billie Piper?
I love Rose when she's trying to get the Doctor to dance. And as awkward as he is, he's the hottest he's ever been. Except for "The Unquiet Dead" where I find him extremely attractive.
Ten, early on, is he adopts the more traditional cavelier approach and then he has to turn a little fierce to protect Rose...and now, five episodes in, he's shortened the leash again.
I noticed how much he shortened the leash in ep. 5 (Rise of the Cybermen) with both Mickey and Rose. He goes after Rose, but he tries hard to keep all three of them together. I wonder if that's a consequence from last week. He doesn't want to lose companions from his own actions. He's taking the idea that he's responsible for the people aboard the TARDIS very seriously now.

Date: 2006-05-18 06:24 pm (UTC)I know you from the BSG fandom, right? Or at least know your fics, right? Because I love them!
Re: Hey! Small SciFi world!
Date: 2006-05-18 07:25 pm (UTC)But she doesn't have the reverance for him as a teacher that other companions have. As I said in one of my other comments...they don't do as much Q&A.
I would have so many questions if I were a companion. I would constantly be asking them! I think it would have been nice to have seen when and how Rose found out the Doctor had two hearts.
Re: The dancing seemed just...odd to me...but I'm over it...
Date: 2006-05-18 05:28 pm (UTC)Yet Nine is about half an inch taller than Jack (check the actors' IMDB details).
I haven't said so before, but I've really been loving these screencap recaps of the episodes. Thank you for doing them! The only shame about this one is that so many of the pictures are dark - I know the scenes took place at night and the lighting was low as a result - so it's very difficult to see some of the facial expressions you're referring to.

Yeah. That's what I was thinking. A rope comes out of nowhere and she starts climbing it? WTF?
I don't really know what my point was, but I know some people didn't like Rose in these two episodes and the only time I didn't like her is when she was stupid and climbed that rope. And acted like a ditz around Jack.
I was really irritated with her when she first met Jack, because it was like her brain leaked out her ears. He wasn't that charming. I kept trying to see if maybe she was just overplaying it, but I can't really believe that. She was fine the rest of the episode though.
Remember what I said about the Doctor's reactions? He's like "The Doctor? Doctor who?" Yeah yeah, still the lamest joke ever. But you know he's thinking it!
I love that joke! I giggled when Rose said it (mostly 'cause I'd been waiting for it). That scene is one of the reasons why I adore this episode. The look on his face there and the ear comment. So great.
Heh. U-boat captain.
