I think whoever reads my journal probably has become completely bored with it since it's the same thing over and over again. DOCTOR WHO!! But it is different this time. I have a purpose. I want to trace the Doctor and Rose's relationship throughout series 1 and then series 2. After Saturday's new episode, I think we could use something to remind some of us why we love Rose and the Doctor, romantic or otherwise.

I'm starting with the episode "The End of the World", because along with "The Unquiet Dead", it is one of my faves of season 1 with. I really liked Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor in "Rose" but I started to love him starting with this episode and it's an important episode, I think. So, onward!

I may refer to future series one episodes, so if you haven't seen all of them, beware.  Otherwise, enjoy!

All screencaps are from Stakes and Stones Screencaps.

Impressive, no?  The first thing he wants to do is impress the girl, show her the future which one would think is pretty cool.  Until you think about it.  Do you really want to know what happens in the future?  What becomes of you or your family and friends, what does the world become?  But yet, what is more impressive then showing someone the far future?  She asked for it.

So he shows her the end of her world.  Why?  There's been debate about this, that he wanted to bring her emotionally to where he is currently at.  But why would anyone want to do that?  Cause that sort of pain to someone that you hope will travel with you for a while?  The thing is, I don't think that was what he was intending to do.  If Jabe the tree hadn't mentioned the War to the Doctor, I don't think he would have shared that with Rose.  But because it was mentioned, he did, and I'm glad because then Rose knows that even though he is alien, he's not exactly happy-go-lucky.  But she learns that in another way as well.

Another thing to watch for is the Doctor constantly looking at her.  He loves seeing her reactions.  And almost everytime he looks for her reaction he's smiling.  He's happy to be introducing this human to aliens, he enjoys being the first one in her life to give her that.  And his smiles are so very contagious.

The introduction of Jabe.  I liked her.  She was very cool, and if she had lived I think she should have traveled with the Doctor and Rose.  They would have been limited on some travels, but she was awesome.  I liked how her and the Doctor worked together.  I was a little put off by the flirting because, um, she's a tree, but I think it was beneficial towards Rose.  She needed to start to understand that these aliens to her are people to the Doctor instead of alien aliens to her.  People are not humans, it should be used as a general term, and she needed to learn that first off.

I had a reason for putting this here.  I swear.  Oh yeah, the TARDIS gets inside her head.  I like that she had to tell him that maybe that was something he should have mentioned earlier.  And immediately the audience sees that while he shows her everything the universe has to offer, she's teaching him.  That makes them more equal because at this point, they're both students, with the Doctor (after so many years) still doesn't have a clue about humans and Rose knowing nothing of the universe.

The first argument.  I loved it.  Earlier, it had hit her so suddenly that she didn't know who this man was and when presented the opportunity she jumped at the chance to learn, not knowing that this was entirely the wrong conversation to have with him now.  Because like he says, "This is who I am, right here, right now, alright? All that counts is here and now, and this is me!"  Just like the computer says in "The Long Game", he is no one.  Right now, after losing his people he is no one, and Rose can't understand that, but she gets a clue by the end.  And leads credence to the thought that he took her here for a purpose.  I just don't think he was expecting it.

(I've no idea what happened to the picture)  Anyway.  Look at her.  She is thrilled that they are able to make up so easily.  Which is a bit naive of her since she sort of initiated the fight.  But she saw, not just how angry he got, but how upset he got.  And she didn't like that.  I think she saw that not only did she make him angry but she made him shut down and walk away from her and she really didn't like that.  She's becoming attached pretty quick and I think that's why it bothered her so much that she didn't know him.

While some people thought that Rose fell in love with the idea of traveling through space and time in "Rose" and that's why she went with him, I disagree.  She never had a taste of that when he asked.  All she knew was this adventure that she had with him and I think that's why she went.  He challenged her to go beyond what she was and she succeeded, but it was the man that did it, not the adventure, or at least it was a combination of both.  In "Rose", she wasn't looking at the danger around her, she was looking at the Doctor struggling to fight this monster that was trying to take over her world.  I don't think she was trying to save the world, she was trying to save the Doctor so he could save the world.  When she stands up with Mickey holding on for dear life, she's staring at the Doctor, thinking "Get him out of this mess and save the world."  It's all the Doctor to her right now, it's not until after this episode that it's the travels she really begins to enjoy.  At least, that's my two cents.

Again, he loves to see her reactions, he wants to see her become entranced by this life style.  But I think he gets by the end of the episode that watching one's world destroyed may not be the way to go.  But you know what?  Neither of them will ever regret it, because everything they do together will never be forgotten and that's the way they want it.

"Go pollinate"  I think she's put off by the flirting between the two, not just because Jabe's a tree, but because this trip was with the Doctor and his eyes are on someone else.  I don't think she's jealous, I just don't think she likes that his attention wandered so quickly.  But I don't think she minded to much, she still had too much on her mind.

And Rose is in danger.  But she doesn't call for the Doctor.  That'll change fast enough.

And the Doctor to the rescue.  I should would trust someone pretty fast if they were so handy in saving my life.  Just saying.

Has nothing to do with Doctor/Rose, but I love this moment.  He is so old here and he has seen so much, that even with is eyes closed, you can see it all on his face.  And he just had to watch Jabe go up in flames, which I actually didn't see coming for some reason.  I just loved the music and this scene.  Thank you Chris.

Apart from Rose looking a little drugged here, I liked how the Doctor became downright cold.  "Everything has its time and everything dies."  It's such an abrupt line, but appropriate and I think it worries Rose, not frighten her.  Because...

She looks so sad as he walks away.  He unconsciously reminds her that he's alien and she's human and all alone.  In the general sense.  Because Rose isn't truly alone, she's never had to actually feel it, unlike the Doctor.  He has that hollow feeling that the audience gets a better grip on in "Dalek".

Not only do I love this shot, I love this scene.  She is utterly lost and heartbroken that the world ended and "no one saw it go."  But he is right there for her, like she needs him to be.  We don't see it much in the series, but she absolutely needs him to be there behind her, to support her, if she really wants to learn the universe and history.  It's not until later that she just plain wants him there.

And he's happy to be there to hold her hand and take her away.  I really do love this scene.

See?  She needs him to lean on.  hehe  I try to crack myself up from time to time.

See, whether you see it as romantic or not, their relationship is awesome and unique.  By the end of this episode, he makes her his equal, unintentionally I believe, and now they can really have some adventures together.  Let me know what I got wrong, or what I got right.  Thanks!

Next episode I will do like this is "The Unquiet Dead", which not a lot of people liked, but I loved it.  I'll show you why next time!

Oh, this is wonderful! I love seeing the images and then reading your commentary, and I'm looking forward to the subsequent episode treatments.

Just one thing - is it just me, or does the layout squish the images horizontally a bit? They seem slightly distorted.

Other than that, fantastic! :)

Thank you! I'm very glad you enjoyed it.

I think the images might be a little too big so the layout might do that to the images, sorry about that. I took the images from the only image place I really like.

I should have a new one up tomorrow! Thanks again.

I think you missed one picture that would make a fantastic addition to your all ready loverly story via picture.

Rose arrived back in the main room with the other guests before the Doctor did (after the Doctor saved everyone), and while the Doctor doesn't say anything to Rose, he gives her a "look". He looked at her and checked to make sure she was okay, as he walked past, and dutifully went over to Jabe's people to inform them of her death (and heroism, hopefully).

*shippy sigh*

You know, I think I was looking for a picture of that and I wasn't happy enough with any of them. But I remember that. He looked at her and you can see in his face, thinking, "Rose. Alive. Not hurt. Okay. Jabe's people ahead." Or something. It was a quick, but important moment. It would have felt weird if he hadn't seeked her out.

Thanks for the reminder. See, I meant to mention things, even without pictures, and you just pointed out that I didn't. I'll definitely keep that in mind for the future reviews.

Thank you for commenting!
