I really liked this recent episode of Torchwood. I just...don't have much to say about it that hasn't already been said?
Icons tomorrow.
I loved Estelle, and I loved the story of Jack and Estelle. But the times of everything is fucking up my head.
Seriously, 1909, 1941, 1944, whatever other year, what the fuck was Jack doing and when was he doing all this? Was the incident on the train in 1909 before or after he left the Time Agency? What's with Estelle's love letters having the year 1944 (that's what I've heard)? Do this writers on Torchwood know of Jack's background from Doctor Who? WHAT THE FUCK AM I MISSING?
I'm sorry, I really liked this episode but the times confused me.
I could have used more of the team here. A little too much Gwen and Jack alone. I think they have a lovely friendship, but I want more Tosh and hell, even more Owen and Ianto. But you know what? I thought Gwen was gorgeous in this episode.
And also, the Gwen-hate is seriously starting to hurt. I thought she was great in this episode and everyone wants her gone or something. And all the comparisons to Rose makes me want to stab something. I'm not saying that Gwen's perfect or that things are perfectly written in regards to her characters, goodness knows I hated what they were pushing with her in "Day One" and the gun scene in "Ghost Machine", while hot, was so planned.
Anyway, I think RTD has some major daddy issues and he fucking needs to stop pushing them on us. TWO of them in one episode, pointing out the girl's dad left and then having the stepdad hit the girl, WTF? Up until he said something about "No wonder your dad left", he was fine. RTD, you have enough haters out there, stop it.
Jack and Estelle were lovely together. She so adored him and he still obviously cared quite a bit, probably still even loved her. I mean, this is Jack, he wanted back into her life so bad that he pretended to be her great lost love's son? That's something. Aw, can I give Jack a hug?

Date: 2006-11-14 05:54 pm (UTC)God, yes. There's this whole post over on the main community about how the show is focused too much on her, blah blah blah.... *headdesk* It's the whole Rose syndrome all over again. *stabs people*
Jack and Estelle were lovely together.
They were fabulous. You could see that they'd cared deeply for each other.
Aw, can I give Jack a hug?
Get in line. :-)

Well, I'm sure everyone wants to hug the naked Jack, can I have the clothed one?

LOL! I agree! And why is he always in wars and military garb?
And YES to the RTD daddy issues. Did he work for Disney or something?

Date: 2006-11-14 11:45 pm (UTC)Now, I don't hate Gwen, but I'm not particularly fond of her. I definitely can't see what makes people love her....The thing I dislike about her, though, is that she does take a huge portion of attention away from everyone else--not just from the rest of the team (and, c'mon, we could stand to know more about them), but also from Jack, who was pretty much the reason a lot of us started watching Torchwood in the first place. Though Gwen did come off a bit more competent in this episode, and I'm in an overall state of annoyance with the team, including Gwen, for their reaction to Jack's decision, so it's not like she's the only one being unloved by me ^.^

Date: 2006-11-14 11:50 pm (UTC)But...that's not her fault. I'm not trying to whine, seriously. It's not that people don't like her that's bugging me, it's seeing the hate EVERYWHERE that's bugging me. I get it, I do. I had many moments where I just wanted her off to screen so I could have more of Tosh or Owen or Ianto or, of course, Jack.
And as annoying as even I find it, I think he's trying to establish things through her eyes so he can get viewers that don't watch Doctor Who.

Date: 2006-11-15 12:30 am (UTC)Personally, I don't find Gwen as the "everyman" of the show very flattering, just like I didn't with Rose--they don't react like normal people would, they rarely have the sort of common sense that a normal person would, and the fact that the show has them set to represent the normal person and somehow draw viewers in without alienating them just doesn't compute.

Date: 2006-11-15 04:48 am (UTC)but it's not Gwen's fault that she's taking more screen time than she should?
Well, no, because she's a character that's being written to have more screen time. I can't fault a character when it's clearly the writers and creators and whoever's doing.
I don't think it's really being understood that we don't need a viewpoint to get into a show. Unlike Doctor Who which was about re-establishing, Torchwood is different in that it's new to everyone, so I can see where having to see things through a certain POV would be annoying. And it is.
