Daleks in Manhatten
Apr. 21st, 2007 10:56 pmI saw the new Doctor Who! It was okay, here's to hoping the second part is a little improvement, although the ending doesn't say it will be.
I loved that Martha is becoming this huge hugger. She didn't even hesitate giving Tallulah a hug and then just tackled Frank when she was so relieved to see him alive.
So, you know how people are ragging about the fact that Martha's flirting with the Doctor? When are people going to realize, HE'S FUCKING ENCOURAGING IT!
When she saw him again and told him that she was glad to see him (which, damn, I would have been to), did he really have to say "Yeah, you can kiss me later?" Or was that just a set up so he could say "You, too" to Frank?
This unrequited "crush" (because I'm so not calling it love) is getting ridiculous because they're making it seem like the Doctor knows she likes him and he's taunting/teasing her, and then shuts her down when she gets close.
That's not going to make me like Ten. That was your job this season people, to make me like him.
This episode does get points for the fact that I didn't flinch as hard with the accents as I did with "Dalek". And then they lost their points because Miranda Raison(Tallulah) just didn't stick to the accent well enough.
But YAY! They're in America. POINT.
I'm still in love with my newer layout.

I'm having a weird reaction to this series - Tennant is better (although better is a relative term), but I think I can now separate out two different strands of why I don't like Ten -I just don't like his behaviour/attitude/personality and his "charm" still seems more like "smarm", but even when he's being relatively neutral or even "good" (like some of the "putting it together" moments in this episode), his acting style is quite artificial, so I'm always aware of watching an actor play a part, rather than a character.
That said, I liked this episode somewhat better than Gridlock, because I liked the guest stars quite a bit, and yet it felt...flat. It will be interesting to see what next episode brings because, really, it all looks pretty obvious how it's going to play out. Even if they do it well, it's likely to be a bit anticlimactic.

Date: 2007-04-22 08:30 pm (UTC)I was somehow bored by this episode because it was either all too predictable or I just read too many spoilers about the episode. I'm hoping to keep next week a surprise. Flat's a good way to describe the episode.
I had a surprise earlier. I was talking with someone who commented on my icons and I let it out that I wasn't a huge fan of Ten (or Ten/Rose) and she was actually shocked because she hadn't talked or met or whatever anyone who didn't adore Ten. Which makes me shudder just a bit. But, to each his own.

I try not to let it bother me, but it does for reasons that have nothing to do with the character. It has to do with what people will let people get away with, behaviour-wise, if they think they're "cute" - and in fact, that people don't see the problems. And also, it bothers me that there are so many other actors out there who are better than he is, and he's got this cushy, well-paying job, he seems somewhat undeserving. Also, I just find Ten, well, selfish. Even his emo about Gallifrey is All About Him.

Ten is selfish. But even with Nine, the thing with Gallifrey was still a bit selfish, maybe not noticeable because it wasn't always there and he didn't bring it up as often.
The reason I liked Ten's emo at the end of "Gridlock" was that it gave me something about his character. The fact that he was trying to suppress it with someone who had not a clue about it. It gave me character development which is great.

Date: 2007-04-22 09:38 pm (UTC)Oh, vastly. TSP was the biggest disappointment of all - I didn't really like any of the Cyberman episodes last series. The middle two seemed generally both flat (more than Daleks Take Manhattan, certainly) and loud. Mrs. Moore was certainly the best thing to come out of those. Army of Ghosts was promising, but Doomsday was, well... crap, basically.
I agree, any Gallifrey!angst is selfish. I think it's contextual how we take it. Nine seemed to have a greater sense of cultural loss; he also didn't talk about it much because it hurt too much. Ten's scarred over a bit, which is good, it's a part of healing and character development. Although it seems to be a bit more about personal memory when he evokes it. It's a subtle difference, and it's not necessarily bad, it's just part of th larger pattern. I can't help but notice that the two times that Tennant's ever projected real emotion seems to be when he can call on his fanboyism!
