I have finished the final Harry Potter book! I decided to take my time with it, which was terrible. But I finished it.
And I have a few things to say, mostly because I realized that I don't think I've ever talked about my feelings on the books on LJ before and I used to be a part of the fandom!
So, I just wanted to get a few things out...
I guess you can take these as disclaimers:
First things first, Ron was always my favorite. Always. Hermione and Harry are extremely close in a tied second place.
Obviously, there's been many times in the books where I'm disappointed in him, but he's always been my favorite, and that might have been magnified because the movies sort of undermine him, so I clung to him as my favorite even more.
Shipping in the books was never a priority for me, although I have preferred Ron/Hermione since I noticed ships in book 4.
I think that's why I've sort of resented the movies just a tiny bit, because it very much seems like they have a different agenda, like they wanted it to be Harry/Hermione.
Or maybe my resentment is because they're just not letting me see the Ron I love in the books in the movies.
Tell me it's different in OoTP? I've yet the see the movie.
Anyway, just some random things in the book I want to note:
-Two/Three years ago, when I was heavy into HP fic, I loved reading Harry/Ginny. I don't know why, I always felt that Ginny should have been more prominent, but *shrugs*. The sixth book sort of took something away from me because Harry/Ginny seemed very much out of nowhere. Therefore his strong attachment towards her in DH didn't really tug at me. It's fine that they ended up together, but only because Harry deserves every sort of happiness that he can get.
-Ron is still my favorite. Yes, I was beyond disappointed that he walked away, but he came back and saved Harry. He came back and worked harder than ever. And I absolutely LOVED how Ron/Hermione was handled in this book. Aside from the kissing when searching for the Ravenclaw Horcrux and when Ron was trying to destroy the necklace, it was subtle (or am I just thinking it was?). And Harry seemed to support them, so it's all good.
-Remus John Lupin? I got a giggle out of that. And then JKR killed him. That broke my heart. Why'd she kill both him and Tonks? That's just very cruel of JK. It seemed awkward that they were married when the book started and then had a kid. I dunno. There's just too much to miss when the book is from one person's POV.
-Tell me I wasn't the only one to believe the Moody wasn't really dead?
-Who else has become a McGonagall fangirl? She rocked.
-And of course I have to say that obviously I thought Neville and Molly ROCKED the fucking house.
-OH! I really loved how Hermione handled Ron coming back. I expected her to run into his arms and weep, which is absolutely horrible of me, but I LOVED that she held that grudge against him. But mostly because Harry accepted him back, so it's not like they were both treating him terribly.
-Was it me, did I miss something, or was Hermione given NO rest time after she was tortured? That was horrible to read, and it seemed weird that it seemed like she had no recovery time.
-JK killed Fred. And Hedwig. OMG. And Dobby. I don't know why I'm surprised that so many died, it really wasn't a battle that you could expect everyone to survive. I was pretty sure going into this book that one of the trio was to be killed. I wouldn't have finished the book if that honestly happened.
-Which brings me to this: Maybe I'm just sensitive to it, but it seemed like a very violent book and it makes me wonder how people can continue to call this a children's bool?
-I cried. Twice.
*All in all, I enjoyed the book, I really did, I don't care who knows it. Also, I probably could have done without the epilogue. Yeah.
FINALLY, no more dodging spoilers and posts. It's over!

Date: 2007-07-26 05:26 pm (UTC)I've always felt like they've left little hints for the R/H ship. Maybe it's because I've always been a R/H person so it's just something I have kept looking for. Hermione hugs him and looks concerned for him (Harry) but she definitely has eyes for Ron. It's pretty adorable.
Regardless, the H/H ship has officially sunk. I love that Harry admitted that he NEVER felt that way about Hermione. I'm not even that into the fandom but it made me happy.
I've always loved McGonagall and I thought she was fabulous in the book. I was so proud of her.
And Snaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaape!

Date: 2007-07-26 05:45 pm (UTC)I thought it was sweet of Harry to comfort Ron by saying that he only loved Hermione like a sister.
I'm so beyond glad that I'm not in this fandom anymore. By the time I got out, I had been in places that I shouldn't have been and from what I've heard, it's just gotten worse.
Oh Snape. I...never got the obsession with him, but he finally got me. After he died, isn't that how it always works?!
I've no HP icons. :(

Totally with you on both points!

Date: 2007-07-26 06:30 pm (UTC)I think the movies played on both ships because the viewers are from both ships so they have to take that in account.

Date: 2007-07-26 06:47 pm (UTC)I can't imagine anyone liking that Ron left. I'd like to think a large bit of it was the necklace getting to him and that he just honestly didn't know what he was doing. But, I can't really defend the fact he walked away.
Really, I was beyond thrilled with how JKR wrote the trio, so I would have been happy without any ship.
H/Hr kind of reminds me of John/Teyla of SGA. I love their friendship, because they have such an understanding of each other, but I don't think they'd click romantically. (Well, I know John/Teyla don't click romantically, IMO)
(HAHA, I felt that I needed a HP icon so bad, that I uploaded this one real quick!)

Date: 2007-07-26 07:03 pm (UTC)I guess it all depends on what you saw and how you saw things. I understand your view with the whole John/Teyla thing. I guess I can see the romantic angle to H/Hr (too many fanfics maybe?). but now I'm happy because I see R/Hr too. I've been wanting to understand what there was about R/Hr that made so many people squee and I saw it :D
Besides, like I said, I felt the whole book was more about the trio than pairings. There were subtle moments of 'ship' and frienship for everyone and the big stuff was about the trio working together.
I was annoyed because Ron has a bad habit of not trusting Harry enough and walking away too often, so I was really angry when he left (angry at JKR mostly) but he was so cool the rest of the book, I'm actually happy with how he was written!
All in all, despite the epilogue and H/G that I'll never get, I thought this was the best book of the series.

Date: 2007-07-26 08:18 pm (UTC)I honestly hadn't seen H/Hr for a long while, but it's a habit that I've gotten. If I like a ship well enough, I sort of miss and/or ignore any other potential ship that one of mine might be involved in. If that could make any sort of sense whatsoever.
I think my favorite bits in the book was the trio constantly moving and setting up in new places. It was sort of amazing to see how well they worked.
I couldn't figure out what I didn't like about the epilouge until I read a few posts: I wanted to know what the trio were doing. I could careless about their kids, Megan says heartlessly. Heh. I wanted to know if they finally were able to achieve the goals they wanted. And know we won't know.

HI! I've been kinda lurking your lj for a while and decided to get out under my Invisibility Cloak. Heh.
Tell me it's different in OoTP? I've yet the see the movie.
I was very pleased with the movie as a whole. It screwed around with a number of the characterizations but it did get the main points of the book correct, IMO. It actually shows that David Yates and Michael Goldenberg (the director and screenwriter) actually read the book. There are some great Ron and R/Hr moments. Rupert nailed them all, and I wasn't as annoyed with Emma in this movie as with some of the previous movies.
-Who else has become a McGonagall fangirl? She rocked.
I've been a McGonagall fangirl since day one and it ticked me off that the evil!McGonagall theory was floating around and people actually thought she could turn.
I must add Molly and Neville rocked too! ^_^
And sorry for the repost. lj obviously hates me. -__-

Date: 2007-07-26 08:36 pm (UTC)I can't wait to see OoTP. It sounds like it's great and knowing that there's a different screenwriter makes me very happy!
McGonagall's just awesome and I seriously didn't know, nor understand, any evil theories that were out there.
I need to add that, because I absolutely loved Neville and Molly!
