WAIT, people are all a-twitter about the rumored man to be replacing Tennant as the Doctor, since he's rumored to be leaving after S4, because the man's not pretty?
When David does leave, I won't miss the people who stop watching.
And there are those who are also judging this guy on ONE performance, if I'm reading correctly? God lord.
Also? Being a great writer does not automatically make a great showrunner. RTD isn't the greatest writer and people want him gone as showrunner. While I admit that I've enjoyed Moffat's offerings, for the most part, how the hell do we know he'll do a better job than RTD?
Although, we'd probably never get another "The Last of the Time Lords". And if we did? All hope is lost. ;)

Date: 2007-08-02 09:42 pm (UTC)ITA! Everyone's always saying he should take over, but all we know so far is that he's a fantastic writer. Being showrunner doesn't mean he's going to be writing all 13 episodes of a season, so how do we really know that he's going to be so much better? I mean I always think of how much the emotional continuity was lacking between the ending of SR and TGITF necause of Moffat not checking the script for SR, and Moffat's episodes never seem to include part of the seasonal arc (BW in season 1, and TW in season 2). So I get the impression that he doesn't necessarily take much interest in the other writers scripts, and of course it's too soon to judge if he will do an amazing job or not, but people acting like he's guranteed to better baffle me. Writer and showrunner aren't identical jobs!
I wouldn't mind a sexy Doctor for the next regeneration though *is horribly shallow*

Me either! I would consider it a bonus instead of a requirement.

I would hope not!

Date: 2007-08-03 03:27 am (UTC)James Nesbitt, I've no idea who he is, haven't seen anything he's been in, so if he is the next Doctor, he's got a nice, clean slate. Like CE got. And we all know how well that worked out. ;)
I'm happy that RTD has given what he has. He just annoys the fuck out of me in his interviews. So, I ignore him there.
I don't so much get the hate. PEOPLE, YOU'D HAVE NO SHOW WITHOUT HIM.

Date: 2007-08-03 12:38 am (UTC)I know. God. It's not like Tennant is either, truth be told. I mean, really. He's at best cute. In a ratty kind of way. (Have you seen Flushed Away?)
Now, I don't actually like James Nesbitt because I've seen him in loads of things and he's always pretty much the same sleazy, slightly smarmy character. He doesn't come off as smart enough for me. If he is Eleven, then I'll be disappointed. I've been waiting out Tennant, but I don't think I can wait out another Doctor that I don't care for, unless the companion rocks.
I agree that people are jumping to all sorts of conclusions about Moffat. I mean, I think he is as good a choice as any, if RTD is going to leave, but as you say, being a showrunner is very different from being a good writer. I think RTD may just be tired - the first year was fantastic. The second was a solid dip. The third was shaky and erratic, with high highs and low lows. It's like staggering when you're dead tired.

Date: 2007-08-03 03:31 am (UTC)*sigh* I know. Why am I still surprised in some of these people?
Ah, I've never seen James Nesbitt in anything (nor have I ever heard of him), so he's got a clean slate for me. If he does turn out to be the next Doctor, here's hoping he's given something better as Eleven.
That's gonna be weird to type.
Looking at these three seasons, makes me wonder if RTD would do better dealing with a new companion every season. While yes, it sort of fell apart at the end of S3, overall, it was still loads better than S2.

Date: 2007-08-03 10:52 am (UTC)Hee. And ITA! He's never been what you'd call Tom Welling type type pretty. But fandom latched on to him in a big way when he started playing the Doctor.
And CE isn't conventionally handsome, but a lot of fandom find him very attractive as the Doctor too. So even if the new Doctor isn't a real stunner at first glance, CE and DT weren't so much either IMO. A lot of it is in how they present themselves when playing the role.
I'm not sure about the current casting spoiler, but I've decided to try and keep an open mind until we actually get the first scenes as the Doctor with whoever plays him. And it would certainly be a welcome relief if the next Doctor wasn't fangirled quite as much as DT as been

Date: 2007-08-03 03:40 pm (UTC)That's certainly true. I'd give it a shot, I might be surprised... although I've now heard Moffat has debunked the Nesbitt part, and so am mightily relieved, I must say. This is one of those actors who's pretty much the same character in every role...worse than DT in that regard.
And it would certainly be a welcome relief if the next Doctor wasn't fangirled quite as much as DT as been
God, wouldn't it be? What really bugs me is the way that they expect everyone to feel the same way, and that somehow they also see him as a great actor. I can go the "cute" route before I can hit the "great actor", as I've always put him in the "incredibly variable, sometimes downright embarrassing" category, even before we got to DW. I honestly thought he might rise to the occasion, but it seems to me he got worse. OTOH, John Smith might be his best performance ever. He's like Bruce Willis in that he's capable of so much more than he usually bothers to do, and that always annoys me.

Date: 2007-08-03 01:12 am (UTC)Seriously? Wow.
Personally, I'm hoping the next Doctor won't be too pretty or young. I'm so tired of hearing about the Doctor's "cuteness" and "gorgeousness". You have to be a lot more than pretty to make a great character, dammit.
