The progress of Doctor/Rose continues in the first two-parter of series one. It'll be a little different the the previous two and the ones to follow, but hopefully you'll still follow along.

All caps taken from Stakes and Stones Screencaps.

Enjoy!

There may be things that you disagree with, but keep in mind, I have not lost the Doctor/Rose love, it's still there, I just don't like some things in "World War III", I'll do my best to make you understand.

The first visit home.  She's so excited that it's only been "12 hours" and he thinks it so cute.  I think it's interesting that she tells him not to leave.  In fact, I think she tells him, what, 2 more times?  But of course, this all goes downhill.  12 months does not equal 12 hours.

And then they're asked if they are "companions" of a sexual variety.  You would think so after the look the Doctor gave Rose at the end of "The Unquiet Dead" but they both denied it in a way that you know nothing happened.  Which is sad, to me.  In fact Rose sort of acts like the thought never crossed her mind, which again is weird.  Anyway.

I love them on the rooftop.  They have a very easy-going nature about them, they get on so well.  And have a good laugh.  It's good to see that they are actually becoming good friends.

And then he laments that he was slapped.  Quite hilariously.  And lets out that he's 900-years-old.  "That's one hell of an age gap."  So maybe she had been thinking something.  The rooftop scene is so delightful though.  They have that companionship and the ability to be comfortable with one another.  It's refreshing to see, because the writers could have done their relationship in so many ways that to see them becoming friends and then more is fantastic. (I liked that word before I started to watch the series, so now you can imagine how often I use it now)

Ah, the keys to his place.  Because again, she questions whether or not he's gonna leave.  So to shut her up he gives her a key.  Or because, like he said, it's about time.  Which suggests that it's been a little while.  Probably no more then a week's time for them aboard the TARDIS.  The smile she gives after getting the key definitely tells you how pleased she is.

And I didn't want to bring anything about Mickey/Rose up because right now in the series, he has nothing to do with Rose/Doctor.  The Doctor doesn't like him, and I don't blame him and Rose really hasn't had a chance to miss him, even though she said she has.  I won't get into their relationship until "Boomtown".

He promises and yet still has to explore.  Of course he does, and she's surprised by that?  Or did she actually think he left?  For good?  I don't think she thought he would try to get closer, to see what was happening.  But then Mickey taunts her over and over again, "Your boyfriend left you" and she tells him "He's not my boyfriend Mickey, he's better than that.  He's much more important than-"  It's interesting that she picked up on that and yet also adds that he's better than being a boyfriend, implying that he's better than Mickey, not that any of them noticed that but she did.  It's an important moment for Rose to say this because she begins to treat him like that, that he's better than being a boyfriend.

And then they hitch a ride to 10 Downing Street.  Couldn't get any decent car ride caps.

It's a gesture of how much he recognizes that Rose is his equal that he doesn't want her to leave his side.  Where he goes, she goes.  But she says to go in without her and he says "Ok" which shows his respect.  Of course he then tells her to not get into trouble, but it's a reasonable request.

After saving Rose and Harriet Jones, he tries to figure out what's going on, how to get them out.  And Rose tries to get him to understand that Mickey isn't such an idiot.  I think it's important to her that the Doctor doesn't take Mickey for an idiot because he's her boyfriend, she chose to be with him just like she chose to go with the Doctor and she doesn't want him to criticize her life choices because his opinion now matters to her.  And it makes her happy when he realizes that he could use Mickey's help.

But then Jackie starts to question the Doctor about Rose's safety.  It annoys him that she does that and that he can't give her the answer she wants.  I don't believe the Doctor has ever really had to deal with companion's families in the past (am I correct?) and his policy of keeping away from domestics makes sense now, why the hell would anyone want to deal with this?

And Rose, while a little hopeful that he'll say he'll make sure she's protected, knows that her mom wouldn't like his answer.  She's seen the danger, and doesn't want to give it up, but wants to appease her mother.  Neither her nor the Doctor can, nor will.

And here's where you really see the trust she's put in him.  She has no clue what he can do to solve the problem with the Slitheen and yet she just tells him to do it.  And that sort of frightens him, for someone to have that utter blind faith in him because he's not always right (as we've witnessed).

"I could save the world, but lose you."  A lovely sentiment, but I don't like it.  Not here, not so soon.  The writers reinforced that it hasn't been that long since they left in "Rose" and his quick attachment seems wrong to me.  Maybe it's supposed to, to signal to the audience that this alien is so hurt and alone that he's clinging to this girl that he likes or they weren't and we were just supposed to swoon.  Maybe he would regret having to put her life at risk, but to actually NOT want to save the world because she's at risk is just too much too early.

But it was played beautifully, and I loved Rose's reaction.  She's shocked that she's become so entrenched in his life that he hesitates to save the world, and she kinda likes that, given the tiny smile she allows when she breaks eye contact.  But the Doctor's relief when Harriet Jones takes matters out of his hands tells me that the Doctor just didn't want to make the cal that would risk Rose's life.

It was so cute with them all huddled in the cabinet.  And I loved the fact that he took both of their hands, it's just a cute little detail.  And that Harriet yells "Hannibal!"  That cracks me up every time.

Most awesome thing ever, the little TARDIS on the screen included.  And this scene, I interpret it differently.

He is manipulating her, reminding her what she could see with him.  But why wouldn't he?  He likes her, likes traveling around with her.  He knows she most definitely enjoys it as well so he tells her what their next adventure would be because he can't just say "Stay if you want" without telling her what she'd miss.  And the look he gives the phone after he hangs up is funny and I think shows his surprise that he did that as well.

And look at her reaction.  She knew exactly what he was doing.  She's confused, shocked and angry that he did.  Because I don't think she would have stayed but he just essentially made up her mind for her.  But she should be angry at herself, because she comes running as well.  While people have said that he becomes obsessed with her being there, she's become obsessed with being there as well.

And yeah, the Doctor asked Mickey to come along for Rose's benefit, but to me, the Doctor was surprised that Mickey said no.  The whole time Mickey has been on the Doctor's ass about Rose, and when offered the chance to be there, to be with Rose, he turns it down.  But this also allows Mickey to grow a little, to recognize that he's not able to do this like Rose and the Doctor, and like Rose implied in the first part, Mickey just admitted that the Doctor is better for Rose.

I love her delight in letting the Doctor know that he's stuck with her.

And this is why he doesn't do domestics and family, it makes him (look) and feel like a little boy.  I don't blame him one bit.

So, there's that.  Anything you disagree with?  Please tell me, I might have actually gotten something wrong or twisted or you just don't agree with some of my analysis, please don't hesitate to point it out.  Thank you.

Ok, either tomorrow or Thursday I'll post the next one and that one will include both "Dalek" and "The Long Game".  Until then!

God! These are just FANTASTIC! (And I agree... my use of the word originated prior to Nine, but is now prolific!)

Here are a few errors I caught.
1) The commentary on the scene with the key... end of the last sentence is currently tells you have pleased she is.
Should be: tells you HOW pleased she is.

2)The caption for the pic that starts with "I could save the world, but lose you."... Beginning of the 2nd sentence of the 2nd paragrpah currently reads She's shocked that she's become she entrenched in his life...
Should be: She's shocked that she's become SO entrenched in his life...

3) Very Next caption... huddled in the Downing Street strong hold as the missle hits. Very first sentence currently reads It was so cute with then all huddled in the cabinet.
Should be: It was so cute with THEM all huddled in the cabinet.

But really, I absolutely LOVE these reviews... you bring thoughts I didn't have while watching the ep, but can totally see thinking back on them!
You are now officially required to do every episode of Season 1. There is NO backing out now! :)

I even double checked and never caught those! Thank you! I'm correcting them ASAP.

Ah! I screwed up the html code! Helps if *I* read over my own comments if I am going to point out mistakes!

But they are a lot of fun, brighten my dreary day in hell at work, and make me smile, besides bring thoughts I hadn't really thought about for the eps and scenes! :)

Keep up the wonderful work.

I think you're partially right in that it was a bit too soon for that sentiment of "I could save the world but lose you." It seems like something he'd be more likely to say after "Dalek".

But on the other hand, I think the intensity of it comes crom Eccleston's acting more than the Doctor as a character. It's a good line and it deserved a good delivery. You could also look at it as coming directly on the heels of that "I'm so glad I met you" line in "Unquiet Dead". He forms a real attachment to Rose in that moment in the basement, even after their earlier argument.

I definitely think it's a line that could have come after "Dalek". It's actually hard to say because like you said, it's that intensity that Eccleston brings. I love the line and it got the right delivery and I think it can be over looked because the chemistry between Billie Piper and Chris makes it seem like the characters have known each other for a lot longer.

Most definitely.

Yeah it might have been to soon to say I could save the world but lose you but I loved it all the same :) Mostly I think because I loved the way Chris/Nine delivered the line and the reaction that Billie/Rose had.

I really liked it too, my problem actually is that I came into the show sort of shipping Doctor/Rose because of a friend's post that was to encourage people to watch the show (in the US). Because of that I sort of immediately cling to them for any sort of relationship. But even thinking like that, the line felt clunky. I don't know if I'm making sense.

Basically, I loved how Chris and Billie played it, but it was too soon in the series for it to be expressed. I think maybe the writers liked the line and couldn't figure out where else it would fit.

Thanks for responding!

I'd just like to say I love these. :) Thank you for taking the time and effort to put them together!

And my take on the "Save the world but lose you" bit... maybe a small hint of his manipulative side, but he knows Harriet is there listening to the mother and daughter situation, and he's somewhat prompting her into taking the decision into a different set of hands, sort of stimulating the PM-to-be into becoming the fast and decisive woman of action she should be (and getting Jackie off his back mwahaha). But the look on his face.. I think he's kind of surprised at himself in a way, like he's a bit shocked he's saying it and believing it on a deeper level than he realized. Of course, the way he's looking at Rose gives the impression that he's totally forgotten Harriet's there, so I could be way off. :) But yes, it was a tad early in the season for such a strong statement. I think my eyes almost fell out of my head when I first saw it.

Great stuff, keep it up!

Thank you!

I like your take on why he would have said it. But then, as you said, he's even surprised he said it. My one and only problem with it is that is was too early.

It's funny, I wanted to discuss this with people, but I really thought I would get questions about my interpretation of his manipulation at the end. It's nice to be wrong.

Glad you're enjoying it!
