So You Think You Can Dance
Aug. 6th, 2008 03:00 pmSo, I'm gonna out myself even more as a quack by talking about SYTYCD. heh :D
Anyway, in honor of the finale performance show tonight (the finale with the winner announced is tomorrow), I want to show you guys my favorite performances of the season. I'm probably missing a few, but these are the ones that are fresh in my mind.
Just so you know, I did find clips that shows ONLY the performance (I think), no behind-the-scenes or judges comments, so they're pretty short clips, I think they're all under 2 minutes. And there's only ten of them. :D
The numbers don't really mean anything, they're just me trying to narrow it down :D Well, I might be lying, the top couple numbers are my absolute favorites. :)
10. Katee and Joshua - "No Air" - (Lyrical) Hip Hop
This is literally the only one from week one that totally caught my attention. I think because I remembered Katee so distinctly from the auditions. She's a beautiful contemporary dancer. And Joshua is SO versatile. I would totally not be disappointed if either of these two win.
9. Courtney and Gev - "Standing There" - Jazz (I guess)
It's so fun! I was going to put their contemporary from week 2 here, but then I remembered I sort of hated the ending to it and then I saw this and remembered how much fun it is!
7. Chelsie and Gev - "These Arms of Mine" - Crap, I can't remember how this was categorized, jazz or contemporary
I love this one. I find it really beautiful and it makes me wish Gev stuck around and Mark was eliminated that night. I mean, Mark was good, but he wasn't great with Kherington, but Gev I thought worked super well with Chelsie. Also? Sonya needs to stick around as choreographer because she effing rocks and is unique and always different.
6. Katee and Joshua (WHAT? They're fantastic together) - "Hometown Glory" - Contemporary (no, there's no trend here ;D)
I get goosebumps every. single. time. And yes, I know Katee overacts it at the end, but the rest? I know Joshua is good in this routine (and thank you Mia for not dumbing it down for him!), but when you can, watch Katee because she owns this one.
5. Katee and Will (I'm truly just now realizing how much I love Katee) - "Imagine" - Pas de Deux (although, it's really a contemporary piece in my eyes)
There were two reasons I didn't want to include this, 1: The song bugs the fuck out of me. I'm so sorry, but it does (it's this version of the song that I'm referring to, I adore the original) and 2: There's a pretty big mistake and it's not as coherently danced together as it could have been.
But I did include it because Will is BEAUTIFUL. There's no way around it, he's gorgeous to watch. And so is Katee. And also because this is choreographed by Desmond Richardson and his partner Dwight Rhoden, and from what they tell us, he's a genius. Look him up on YouTube. :D
4. Hehehehe, Katee and Twitch - "Mercy" - Contemporary (don't watch this for sappy love song contemp!)
I don't know why, as Twitch didn't really dance, Katee fucking pwned him, but I watch this OVER AND OVER AGAIN, YOU GUYS. It's not the kiss either, I don't know! I LUFFS IT THOUGH. There's also this movement at 1:14 that kinda has me memorized, it's awesome. I'm also amused by how Katee's pointed toes always distract me, I don't know why. I'm always watching for pointed toes and hers are sure pointed! heh
3. Jessica and Will - "Alone" - Lyrical Jazz
This was when I really started to cheer for Will and Jessica. They had a real raw chemistry on-stage and I'll admit, I don't think he connected with Katee and Courtney like he did Jessica. I adore the majority of Mandy Moore's pieces, I definitely hope they keep her on as choreographer for a long time :D I think it's just a pretty performance to watch and I think it pinned them as the "mature" couple, I think it would have looked a little childish if any of the other couples did it, so I'm super glad that Mandy gave them this.
2. Courtney and Mark - "The Garden" - Jazz
God, this is sexy and performed to the hilt and the musicality and the beats and GAH, it's so fantastic. I think this was the one that really made me cheer for Mark to stay over Twitch. But I think those two (IMHO) mediocre weeks before caught up to him.
This is the same choreographer as #7! Sonya Tayeh, can you believe that?! She must stick around. Fantastic.
I'll leave this one out of the cut (unless you guys want it there, if you screws up your f-list, let me know!) to entice you to look under the cut and see all the wonders :D
1. Jessica and Will - "Silence" - Contemporary (PLEASE TYCE, NO MORE BROADWAY FROM YOU, STICK TO THIS)
I can't...express what this piece makes me feel. The choreographer, Tyce Diorio based this on Adam and Eve. It's just...I was pretty much breathless when I saw this on TV for the first time. It's not like anything that's been on the show before and it's not something I've seen danced before. I think this is one of the first or only pieces on the show that didn't have people screaming and yelling in the audience. You can fucking hear their feet hitting stage as they move. It's so beautiful and it still takes my breath away to watch it. I find this my absolute favorite piece on the show ever.
And just like the other piece I credited to them, this one couldn't have been done by anyone else, I'm convinced.
And there it is! I'm missing so many, I know. But if you watch the show, feel free to point out your favorites to me! :D

Date: 2008-08-06 08:23 pm (UTC)As for choreography, Tabitha and Napoleon are always hit or miss with me. They've had some wonderful routines but most of the time, I feel like they follow the lyrics too closely so the routines become sore of obvious. I do LOVE Sonya. She's excellent.

Date: 2008-08-06 08:44 pm (UTC)And I'm not ranting at you, but I don't like the idea that someone might not "deserve" to win. It bugs me. They all tried out for the show, they've all worked hard to get votes. If she wins, it's because America voted for her. I say this mostly because people didn't make a big deal out of Will being voted off because "he didn't need it", but people are up in arms about Mark. Ugh, I need to stay out of that comm!
I also say this because I think I'm cheering for Courtney because no one else is! heh
I 100% agree with you about Tabitha and Napoleon. And SONYA LOVE.

Date: 2008-08-06 09:15 pm (UTC)No, I get what you're saying. I just meant that maybe she hasn't been as technically proficient or consistent as Katee. But I want her to win and I'm actually going to vote tonight. I thought Will was a great dancer but I didn't really dig his personality, so I didn't mind that he was kicked off.
I think it would be amazing if Courtney wins it all but I think it might be between Katee and Joshua at the end.

And when they judge? They hurt my heart. I really dislike hearing them speak.

Date: 2008-08-06 09:28 pm (UTC)If it wouldn't cost a fortune on my cell phone bill, I'd vote. I'm just totally cheap :D
I think it'd be great too. Joshua and Katee are amazing as well, and I'd totally be happy with their win. I don't know why I wouldn't be as happy with Twitch. He's a great guy, but I just don't think he's been great for a little while.
Oh the judges, they hurt my head. And my ears. I liked listening to Lil C though!

Date: 2008-08-06 10:32 pm (UTC)Can we text a vote in as well?
I'm a little over Twitch. I was very happy he made it through but I don't know...he's not doing it for me anymore. Not that he's not talented but I feel like the reason he's been around so long is that he was on last year.
I like Adam Shankman most of the time and Mia too.

Totally with you on Twitch. I feel bad, but he just hasn't been up there for me.
Oh yeah, Adam, he's great.
