I'm only using this icon because I at one point thought it not unusual to compare Robin Hood to Merlin.
So, I'm up to episode 10 (yay sleeping issues).
AH, I love the Arthurian legend. I have for a very long time, not sure when it started. Unfortunately, there's no definitive narrative for the story, which always sucked, but I feel like I'm good.
With that said, I have to say that I really love some of the interpretations on Merlin. It's all so interesting.
- It bugs me just a tiny bit that Morgana doesn't seem to be related Arthur at all. And since it was said that Igraine was barren, it's pretty much certain that Morgana isn't her daughter. I keep waiting for that twist though, heh, so it makes me feel weird to see sparks with her and Arthur. And I have to say I LOVE what they're doing with Morgana anyway. Or should I wait until I've seen all 13 episodes to really love it?
- I LOVED THE EPISODE WITH LITTLE MORDRED! The foreshadowing was fun (although, it killed me that we had to wait the whole episode just to hear the boy give his name). The bond formed with Morgana and Mordred was just perfect. The ONLY thing I didn't like was the he's not Arthur's son (which would be why there's no Morgause, with Morgana bonding with him and him already born, it's pointless - and makes it more weird that Morgana and Arthur aren't related - to me at least). That's what always made it so tragic in the end, that his ultimate nemesis was his son. But still, great episode!
- I really enjoy what they're doing with Merlin, his character always seemed the most flexible. Although, I always thought it more interesting that Merlin was involved in Arthur's conception (in most stories) and then Arthur's right hand magician for a while. But they did take that bond and run with it. Although Merlin's importance is really...exaggerated here. I never got the idea that he was so needed, but I'm often wrong. And while I do love how Merlin is portrayed for the most part, wasn't Merlin prophetic? I seem to remember that was how he was able to first instruct Uther what he needed to do, and later Arthur. Maybe that's developing.
- I truly adore Gwen, I am disappointed though that she's a servant. It'll be interesting to see what they do with her. Her story ALWAYS revolved around others, I'd like to see them develop something for Gwen alone. (Heh, I love that it's shortened to Gwen) She's so adorable! I love it when she says something, usually to Merlin, and then stumbles to make sure it's the right meaning. Cute! I quite like her and Merlin :) And a sweet friendship with Morgana, that's something new. And I thought it was excellant to show that quick attraction with her and Lancelot, quite perfect.
- I never liked Uther, so seeing him at times sympathetic is hard for me, heh. It's lovely to see his love for his son, but his crusade against magic is SO EFFING EXTREME.
- I've really no complaints about Arthur. He's how you'd expect in any form :D
Random...
- Is there to be more interaction between Merlin and Morgana? Because that would be AWESOME.
- I loved that Excalibur was thrown into the lake. That was great. I knew it'd happen as soon as we knew Uther was going to fight and the sword was forged. That predictiability is a little annoying episode to episode.
- Did I mention how much I liked the episode with Mordred?
- The whole Uther/Igraine/Arthur's birth thing is always gonna bug me. My canon always had the...brutal conception of Arthur because thanks to Excalibur it'll always be burned into my skull. But I think I can get over it. Maybe.
- And that's it. I shouldn't be comparing it to the history too much, should I? I CAN'T HELP IT. That's how much I've been enamored with the lore, I always have fun talking about it! Fuck me. I'll leave now, heh.
Don't mind any grammar/spelling weirdos, I'm not paying much attention.
Alright, I'll be finishing the last three episodes tonight, and no doubt will have more to offer tomorrow. :D

Date: 2009-01-04 06:29 am (UTC)Thank you for reminding me of it, it's something worth re-watching. :D
Re: QUESTION
Date: 2009-01-04 06:36 am (UTC)I...actually don't plan on catching any of the episodes when it returns later this year, so I suppose I don't have a high opinion of it at the moment, heh. It's fun at times though! And if you try it, PLEASE don't watch just the first episode, have time to watch like the first 3 or so in a block. The first episode is terrible, and that's just universal.
I would just hate to say NO, DON'T, but it's been a pretty frustrating show personally, that I'm having trouble not saying it, heh. I do actually recommend the first season though, I really enjoy that one.
