So, apparently I’m not continuing series one Rose/Doctor screen-cap commentary at the moment because I became completely sidetracked by the latest Doctor Who episodes, "The Impossible Planet" and "The Satan Pit". Even though I’m dying to do "The Parting of the Ways". The rest of series one, with only "Boom Town", "Bad Wolf" and PoTW left, will have to wait until the end of the month or the beginning of July. I only have time this week for these two episodes, barely, because my family and I are finally moving out of this hellhole. So, moving on.

Does refer to earlier series two episodes and vaguely to series one. May include some references to the second episode, "The Satan Pit". And a warning for language.

I really enjoyed this episode, I was surprised by how well I thought the writing and acting and directing came together. I especially took a liking to Ida and Captain Zack. And on to the episode.

I actually didn’t know what they could have been laughing about the first time I watched this. I could really hear what the Doctor was saying, so I was like "What’s so funny?" Listening to it again, and seeing others reactions, I got the impression that they were laughing at the idea of going somewhere else because of a little trouble with the TARDIS. That doesn’t seem appropriate since last time the TARDIS had trouble they ended up in an alternate reality where they lost a companion.

I thought the sets were really well done for this episode. It made sense that everything would have that rusty live-in feel, and it’s just an awesome set. After watching the confidential, I think we should worship the crew that puts the sets together though and scouts for areas to film in.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
That is awesome. And really foreshadow-y. But the symbols underneath are the best. I would have been trying to study those along with Toby and the Doctor all day. Except for the fact they don’t really have any basis to translate, yeah? But who cares?
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
It’s…not so threatening, is it? And right before the credits come on, and Rose sort of jumps with the chair towards the Ood? Makes me laugh every time, even though I didn’t know what the Ood were doing, I really thought they were threatening them. But it was a brilliant idea that it was just a miscommunication.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Aww, he’s so cute. But that’s it, he’s cute and that’s not very intimidating which is probably why everyone looks at him funny when he tries to take authority. The only time someone really listens to him is when they like him, or trust him.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
They are such dorks.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Aw, the Captain. Zack. I’ve been told that he was in The Mummy Returns, and I adored him in that. He was awesome in this two-parter. If there was any character that I would like to see again, one of my votes would be for him.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Jefferson was really cool. I liked him a lot. Well, it wasn’t until the next episode that I really understood why I liked him, because he was a little abrupt in this one.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Danny. And his seemingly blue hair. That’s weird. I kinda liked him. I think Rose did too. I liked him in "The Satan Pit" as well, but that’s for later.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Ida and Scooti. Was I the only one that thought Ida was going to be like, "And this is my daughter"? Just me then? Okay. I know that their were a lot of people that assumed something else, but I thought Ida seemed very maternal, not that anything is wrong with what everyone else thought, that’s very possible. But I figured, they have a similar look, maybe they’re related. Still no-one else? Okay. Oh, and like Zack, I would love to see Ida again. She was lovely.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I was fascinated by how terrified they both looked. How awful would it be to be on the edge of something like this. Actually, what does Rose know about black holes? Not that I think she’s stupid or anything, but we’ve never been given the indication that she’s seen one before (except for movies maybe), so how did she guess? Just lucky?
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Pretty shot, but not the most flattering for Rose/Billie. Any shot from behind is good for the Doctor. How terrifying must it be to know you are on the brink of being sucked into a black hole? In reality, we hardly know what would happen if we were to go through a black hole. All we know is that what goes in ceases to exist(right?) and will never return.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Oh, the Ood. They are so awesome!

OMG, did the hair people forget that Rose is a girl and probably likes to brush her hair once in a while? Come one, it looked terrible in both episodes. Of course this comes from the girl that almost never wears her hair down. Back to the point, I loved the Ood. They were awesome.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Glasses! They are so cool and look so good on him. If I’m going to continue talking like this, maybe there is no point in writing these things. They give him a whole different look. He looks so serious here. In fact, I had no idea what the hell anyone was talking about the first time I watched this episode. The only thing I remembered about this scene the first time I watched it was this:
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Such a human-loving dork! Or is this him mocking humans? "I love how stupid you lot are." Is that what it is? It’s funny, I started to do episodes like this, commenting with screen-caps to point out my favorite moments. Ones like these that everyone notices and likes, and those that most people either don’t notice or they were so small no really paid attention it. That’s why I love reading Jacob’s recaps on TWoP, but a lot of times he doesn’t point out those moments! So, bear with me while I point out the obvious (especially with this specific episode) and the not so obvious, which I don‘t think will happen often with these two episodes, BUT I‘LL TRY. Thanks.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I love that Rose is so amused with the Doctor’s human love, or whatever. You know, she was really pretty in this episode, except for the hair and the eye makeup. Why the need to make it so heavy? Oh, and can somebody tell me how her jacket worked? Was there a shirt underneath or was that a part of her jacket or what was going on with it?
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
He lost his TARDIS! I don’t remember if I knew about this beforehand or not, but I do know that it didn’t look good. The one and only thing he has left, as he said, and it just disappeared into an abyss. I wish Rose would have shown some reaction except for worry about not getting out of there. If it were me, I would be crying, not only because I was stuck but because it was the TARDIS!
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
God, he is getting no comfort here. He’s trying to comfort Rose, letting her know she’s not alone, but he’s not getting anything here. He’s lost his beautiful ship, he’s lost any connection to his home, and he’s lost his freedom, because being stuck anywhere for any reason is hell for him, so the "Welcome to HELL" sign was very indicative of what was to happen.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Oh Toby. I loved this music in this scene. Before he would turn, it would crescendo and then stop. It was perfectly creepy and beautiful throughout. I love musical scores. I played the violin for eight years, and in high school my teacher was able to buy musical scores from movies, it was edited for orchestras like mine, but it was always so much fun to play music from "Lord of the Rings" (which was beautiful to play) and "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which was a lot of fun). So, my ear always searches out the music, and it was just lovely in this episode, and I think some of the better music this season has seen.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
This wasn’t so scary actually, not until later, but the red eyes were not cool.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
This was the best scene in the episode. The amazing music and how they can’t help but watch something die. It’s so tragic, but these people can’t help but be thankful that they’re that bitter pill that won’t be swallowed. Some might not be able to stop themselves from thinking "Maybe" when they see one more thing sucked into the black hole. It’s all a matter of time. It’s always about time. Time, time, time. There’s never enough or just too much to stare into the abyss. They still live day to day, working and eating and sleeping. Not knowing if they can leave safely, or maybe it’s a matter of not willing to risk it because when they leave no-one will be able to say goodbye or pay tribute to them if they follow the rest into the black hole, no-one will take notice when they die. Or I could be talking complete nonsense.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
And the Doctor freaks out about having to buy a house, not helped when Rose points out mortgage. It’s so in character to flip out like this, he hates standing still, has since the moment I first watched the show (back in March when Chris Eccleston’s run as the Doctor starting playing in the U.S.). It’s in his blood to travel, to keep time throughout time and space, not settle down. It’s completely against his nature to just stop, and live(which makes me think that it was very weird that he was thinking about how he could make money to sustain himself when he thought himself trapped at the end of GiTF, I guess with the thought that there was a somewhat definite way to get back to his TARDIS [and Rose and Mickey] is different from the idea that his TARDIS is completely lost).
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
And then he really freaks when Rose mentions they share that house. That was a major case of Rose sticking her foot in her mouth. She just witnessed him completely wigging out about settling down and then she just completely throws in his face, "Let’s get a house together". At least, that’s how he sees it. I don’t think she was really thinking anything other than the fact that it just sort of hit her, that hey, they lived together on the TARDIS, why not continue that? But then she must not have been thinking very hard, because she didn’t seem to notice that all this about houses and mortgages was just killing him to think about. Being stuck, standing still, sticking around after he saves the day, it‘s a life he’ll never have because he won‘t allow himself to have that. No consequences.

He’s so lonely and won’t do anything to fix that, the TARDIS was literally the only thing he had left, but he doesn’t do anything to hold on to something else and make it his (and I’m not really referring to just people). He wants to feel lonely, he wants to distance himself, from what is very debatable. After PoTW, he seemed to let go of his past, of what he did to end the Time War, but all his other problems seemed to have gotten thrown right into his face again with "School Reunion" when he was reminded that the travels of his companions are not so easily forgotten, and then he’s reminded that everyone he comes to care about and love, they can die in a blink of an eye and not just from the danger that traveling with him puts them in. He’s facing the morality of his companions, and was reminded (because I don’t think he can ever completely forget) that humans are fragile, not immortal.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
And Rose knows she put her foot in her mouth. And she looks sort of upset about it (or it could just be the cap that I grabbed). I think she does understand the Doctor’s wanderlust, she’s been bitten by that bug as well. Which is probably why she kind of gives a "Or not" (non-verbal) look when she turns her head. I just don’t think she knows how far into himself that wanderlust is embedded.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
But then he seems pleased when she tells him that it’s not so bad being stuck with him. I just don’t get them. It’s sweet though, because he’s not exactly weeping at the thought of being stuck with her. I still don’t get them though.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I laughed out loud when she threw her phone. She wasn’t exactly panicked when she did, which was weird, but looking at this cap, its like she was tossing a ball and then you look at the Doctor. "There goes another phone." He doesn’t seem to care that she just chugged her phone across the room. Which brings another question, when the hell did she get the phone she had in RotC and AoS? She had her original phone in "School Reunion" (witnessed when she called Mickey when she was a dinner lady), so when and why did she get a new one?
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
No actual reason for this screen-cap aside from the fact that I can’t figure out what’s happening, unless I watch the episode again, but then I still don’t think that would explain this screen-cap. Is Danny really staring at Rose’s breasts? I like the Doctor’s face, "Are you fucking kidding me?" Who’s is aimed at? It’s great.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
They’re great, aren’t they? Gotta touch their heads! Oh, wait, sorry. Did anyone else see the confidential where David Tennant was gushing about these guys? And how he apparently wanted to bite their ears? He’s such a dork. I love him. But yeah, the whole beast is rising, you will worship him was really creepy. The idea of the devil rising is scary, because I, appropriately, associate the devil with death, with him, you die and burn forever. But he’s the father of lies, it’ll be good to remember that. He might know those secrets, and he’ll take it and he’ll twist it and he’ll lie to frighten you. I’m not a religious person, but I do believe in a higher being, so I’m not going to talk much religiously speaking. But all this talk about Satan shall be saved for "The Satan Pit".
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Oh Scooti. When you see your friend outside, without the suit needed to actually breathe, you should probably find someone to tell. But she froze, he was obviously doing something to her, hypnotizing or something, because she reached out for him, to him. She wanted to come to him. But then, maybe that was a natural reaction for her when it came to Toby. Whichever, it was very well played.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
And now he’s fucking creepy and scary. Who was the actor that played Toby? He was awesome.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
How terrifyingly sad. After watching the confidential, I think we as the audience have to appreciate how they do things to make things like this look good on the screen. "She was 20 years old." That’s so terribly young, Rose’s age, nearly my age, to imagine death happening to someone for no reason. It hit me a little harder because my cousin recently died, extremely suddenly (sick and passed away within a week) and he was only 18. Death is always hard, but especially when it happens to those so undeserving of it. Not that people deserve to die, I just mean those that haven’t had to chance to truly taste life.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I don’t think he needed to say I’m sorry. It’s all in his face how horrible this was, why apologize? Then of course, this must be hitting him a little harder than expected. This could happen to Rose so very easily all of sudden.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
He looks like a little boy trying on his daddy’s space suit. It’s the eyes, it’s all in the eyes.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
It’s all she can do. Tell him to be safe and wish him luck. She doesn’t often get to worry about the Doctor, but she does do it well. Of course with the Doctor out of the way, she’s almost useless. She really has nothing to do because she’s always relied on the Doctor to direct her. She’s solved things on her own, she has her own head, but as we’ll see in "The Satan Pit", she’s very one-minded when things involve the Doctor and almost completely flounders without him around.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I just really liked their "goodbye". I can’t explain it. This is one of my favorite shots of Rose, in the whole series. It’s among few others that were just really good. Rose was just being very mature about it and wasn’t clingy and it’s how their relationship should be, they care about each other but don’t let it run their lives. This trips up somewhat in the next episode, but it sort of works out. You know, I get this about them:  They love each other, but they don't know what it is, what it means because they are both completely unable to appreciate it because they won't let themselves embrace it.  They'd rather die thinking, "Oh, she/he knows." I disagree, because I'm one of those people that would be wholly unafraid to let you know, "Hey, I love you. What's for lunch?"
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Aw, poor Toby. Why him? I think we get a pretty intriguing answer in the next episode.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
My God, that’s beautiful. They did an amazing job on the underground cavern. I think I would have been too distracted by what was around me to really find what I was looking for. It’s really amazing. A lost city.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Look at that! Forget the damn seal/pit, look around you. There’s some history for you Doctor.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Scary Ood. The red glowing eyes were cool. They were very effectively menacing.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Run the fuck away! They want us to suspend our disbelief when we watch a show like this, but I can’t do that when my first thought is to FUCKING RUN AWAY. Fine, I’m a wuss and this episode startled me. This is really a children’s show? Because they can make grown people jump, I don’t think children would appreciate the nightmares they might get from this episode. I mean, I was really little when my parents were watching The X-Files, and a lot of those episodes gave me nightmares. Man, I’m such a wuss. Of course with the way this cliffhanger was resolved, maybe I can understand why, but still. It’s the principal man.

Anyway, I plan on posting "The Satan Pit" hopefully soon, so watch out for it! This took me forever to write, so I don’t know how long it’ll take me to do "The Satan Pit", it might not be posted for another week because I’m moving starting tomorrow. We’ll see.

Anyway, please comment with anything you agree with or disagree with, please don’t hesitate to contradict anything I said, or to correct anything I got wrong. Thank you! Hope you enjoyed.

ETA: How the hell did I forget?  I got screen-caps from http://gallery.chaotic-creative.com/v/doctorwho/.  Sorry!

The actor who played Toby is a guy called Will Thorp, he's not particularly well known in the UK, the only other things I've seen him in is a medical drama called "Casualty" (a bit like ER but slower and about 20 years older) and "Strictly come dancing". He is good though, although when I first saw him I yelled at the telly "Eeshk, it's Woody from Casualty!!!"

Thanks for letting me know, being in the US, I wouldn't even know who the most popular actors are in the UK, so the lesser known ones are a complete mystery. Thanks for this!

I love that shot of Rose, too. They really filmed that bit well. Love your review. I didn't notice Danny staring at Rose's breasts! Meh. Too busy staring at DT's glorious facial expressions.

that's interesting, the family angle. i never thought of that.

another thing i never thought of: was bumming around the net and happened upon a snarky comment by some jerk to the effect of 'Ida and Scooti: promoting the Gay Agenda" or some such nonsense. shut up with your hate, ok?

I agree. I didn't see any sort of gay agenda, and no matter the relationship between Ida and Scooti, it was vague enough that I don't think anyone should have been bothered by it.

Well, I figured that Ida wasn't her mother when she didn't say anything. But I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one to think so at first!

Very nicely done! Did you recover your file?

Things I loved: the base crew, all of them, but Ida and Jefferson especially (oh, my, the good things that happen with great actors!); all of the design elements, but particularly the old civilization (semi-submerged pre-teen desire to be an archaeologist comes rushing back to life!); Rose being Rose for a change this series!; cinematography (except for unflattering butt shot of Rose, because frankly, Billie's bum is not her best feature, and we already kinda knew that from The Empty Child and those jeans with the pockets down too far on her thighs!); David Tennant taking his Ritalin.

Things not so good: that laughter at the beginning - very forced, and as you point out, really not in the best of taste, but that's kind of par for the course this series (I hope they're going to get smacked down for their hubris, and that's a dangerous desire to cultivate in your fanbase!), although mercifully brief this time; losing the TARDIS again, and Rose not really getting it, because, hey she and the TARDIS were once one, and that's a little cold. Even if she had amnesia, you'd thing she'd have a sense of connection to the old box. (Aside: In PoTW, when the Doctor started talking about leaving the TARDIS to die, I totally lost it - I was so far gone that I almost choked to death when the next fantastic thing happened and he turned to look at her.)

Re: Ida and Scooti - very similar look, could be mother and daughter easily; but strangely, my first thought was, "The casting director obviously has a 'type'"!

Yeah, Doctor No. 10, not so scary. Cute doesn't necessarily mean "not scary". David Krumholtz, Bobby Carlisle, Stanley Tucci - all similarly cute and can be scary as hell: speaking of 6 degrees of British Television, Bobby Carlisle kills David Bilborough (Christopher Eccleston) in Cracker in unforgettable shock moment that is the British equivalent of David Krumholtz knifing Carter and Lucy in ER; Bobby Carlisle then takes over part of Begbie in Trainspotting when CE turns down part because he wanted Renton, and BC wins part of Bond villain over CE who has food poisoning and apparently crap audition! Hey, it all ties together!.But, yeah, David Tennant doesn't really do "scary".

More seriously, I think you're spot on that the Doctor (in his Tenth incarnation) seems to be wallowing in his loneliness and not doing anything to fix it. Nine was more obviously broken, and some see him as overly needy (me, I think he was about the right amount of needy considering what he'd been through), but Ten doesn't really engage with people, he likes to watch observe. Yeah, he hugged the Captain and all that, but that concern for people as individuals (Harriet, Nancy, the pig mermaid, Jabe's family, even the Gelth) is missing. That's a coping mechanism, but not as healthy as reaching out.

Put my name down amongst those who want Ida as a companion.

And I think Rose is wearing a slightly darker mauvy(!)-purple top underneath a jacket that has large, overlapping inside placket-thingys. (My grandmother the seamstress must be spinning in her grave.) Since Rose went from grey to red in the last series, what is the significance of the blues and purples and mauves this series?

that laughter at the beginning - very forced

That's what really struck me as weird, that it was extremely forced. It seemed completely wrong.

In PoTW, when the Doctor started talking about leaving the TARDIS to die, I totally lost it - I was so far gone that I almost choked to death when the next fantastic thing happened and he turned to look at her

I lost it as soon as he ran out of the TARDIS. It's heartwrenching.

"The casting director obviously has a 'type'"!

Lol, that's the perfect thing to think of when you look at the actresses.

it was extremely forced

Thank goodness it was the only big cringe this episode.

I lost it as soon as he ran out of the TARDIS. It's heartwrenching.

Oh, I was crying at that point, well before, really; sobbing when he talked about the TARDIS falling to dust; and nearly had a heart attack when he turned to Rose. I just had to stop when the hologram was over and have a good cry (luckily, it was on DVD!). Goodness, I'm tearing up just thinking about it, and I've seen it a good 7-8 times now! See, this is the really upsetting thing about CE's acting. It never loses its oomph, and if it's a well-written part - with that, all those threads coming together - it's just killing. Still get shattered at Jude, am still bowled over by his deviousness, viciousness, and tenderness in Othello, and his sweet, innocent date with Judy in Second Coming means that even spaghetti will never be the same again.

I would not be averse to more from Ida, but alas, poor Scooti, she is no more... Great hair and skin though!

I don't know what happened, I hit to post my reply when I wasn't even done. So...

Cute doesn't necessarily mean "not scary".

I didn't mean in general. Did it come across like that? Yeah, I know that it's not always the case, but with Ten, it sort of is. I just can't buy into his anger.

Yeah, he hugged the Captain and all that, but that concern for people as individuals (Harriet, Nancy, the pig mermaid, Jabe's family, even the Gelth) is missing.

Yes! I wish I could be more wordy, but I'm so tired after today, I hope to give a better discussion soon!

Since Rose went from grey to red in the last series, what is the significance of the blues and purples and mauves this series?

I am horrible when it comes to clothes. I never remember what someone is wearing, so I don't really see a pattern in what Rose wears. But I love to hear others opinions, because they always seem to make sense!

You're allowed! Even if you weren't probably worn out from the moving. I was kind of surprise to see answers today, to be honest. I thought it would be tomorrow at the earliest.

N: Cute doesn't necessarily mean "not scary".

M: I didn't mean in general. Did it come across like that?

Oh, no. No, it didn't, sorry, that was my fault, I left out a "step". Once you said that, I started thinking, hmm, are we ever scared by cute? And a few examples did pop to mind. That's what I meant. DT was scarier in Secret Smile, which he played with much more subtlety. I still wouldn't say he was scary, because he never got to that chill-down-the-spine level that some actors can go to, but underplaying was more effective. One of the scariest performances I've ever seen was Kevin Spacey in Se7en, and he is very meek and mild in that. He and Arliss Howard are the best at that "ooh, look, little cuddly guy" and then ripping your head off - quite literally in both cases!

I don't really see a pattern in what Rose wears. But I love to hear others opinions, because they always seem to make sense!

I tend to notice colour symbolism, though in one of the Confidentials, I do recall seeing something about the costume designer saying that she intentionally moved Rose from white/grey to pink to red through S1. Although I do notice that both she and the Doctor have maroon color accents in Rose and EoTW: he's in black leather jacket and jeans with maroon jumper; she's in jeans, white tank, grey sweatshirt, and a grey hoodie with maroon panels. In the key "personal", life-affirming episodes - Dalek and Father's Day - his jumper is green, which is a "life" colour. And, of course, he's all in black in BW/PoTW, and she's little red riding hoodie.

Oh, I also meant to mention the music. The fiddle tune in this double episode was excellent. Murray Gold isn't the most original composer in the world; even the cues that he really "gets" are derivative of other films/tv shows, but they're beautiful: this fiddle tune; the Hebrew chant for the Daleks (kinda kinky if you think about the Daleks as being based on the Nazis - it's very subversive, like the human DNA they reject); and the beautiful Time Lord/Bad Wolf vocalise.

Oh, meant to say: Did anyone else get Rose/Mickey flashbacks during the mortgage discussion and when the Doctor said the TARDIS was all he had left?

Oh, good one! But, no I didn't. Sadly, I never am reminded of other situations unless dialogue is repeated, like it was in this two-parter.

It was the moment he said he had "nothing" left, and my mind just popped to PoTW, where Mickey questioned Rose's assertion that there was "nothing left for her here". And then the whole "what will we do now" conversation played a little like Mickey in Boom Town ("we were nice"), although more as an undertone. I thought it was a neat symmetry. Whether it was intentional or not! Kind of gives Rose a taste of her own medicine, even if it doesn't exactly make me happy. (Definitely one of those scenes where you wonder if Nine would have done things differently - he hates doing domestic, but he also has a hard time saying "no" to Rose, so...)

Are we playing icon tag? :-) Hmm. The colours on yours look richer. Hmmm. Maybe it's 'cause I used LJ's icon maker. I really wanted to get the top of the TARDIS central column in there without showing the BBC stamp! But I like the closer crop, too.

Yeah I definitely got a Firefly/Serenity feel from the sets. All rusty and held together with tape!

And I was looking at Captain Zack for ages trying to figure out where I'd seen him and of course it was The Mummy Returns. Totally different character in that by the way, just shows his versatility. He was great in this, loved him. He was also in the BBC series, Casanova, wherein our very own Tenth Doctor, David Tennant played Casanova himself, as I'm sure you've heard. I'd love to see that series.

I thought Ida and Scooti looked alike two, but thought neither the lesbian thing, nor the mother/daughter thing! I just kept confusig them throughout my first viewing of the episode.

And that shot from under the Doctor and Rose looking at the black hole - I totally agree with you, SO not Billie's best angle. Forget the black hole, it was kind of difficult not to stare at her... really nice jeans.

I found both Toby and Danny kind of hot. Although my like for Toby declined on the reveal that he was in fact possessed by SATAN.

And on the Doctor saying he was sorry after Scooti died - I find that weird too. In every episode when someone's died, he says that, and I puzzle over it every time. My boyfriend speculates that it's because his whole planet perished as a result of his efforts to fight the daleks, but I'm still on the fence.

Me too. I remember that right before I started watching the first series in this past March, I knew that Chris Eccleston wouldn't be in the second series and that a David Tennant was taking his place. I tried to remember where I heard that name and all I remember was "Oh, that really creepy guy in Harry Potter." I was happy to see that he's not like that here.

And on the Doctor saying he was sorry after Scooti died - I find that weird too. In every episode when someone's died, he says that, and I puzzle over it every time.

I can understand it when it's something that he's doing, and it's a cause from what he's done, but with Scooti and couple others, it doesn't mean anything because he really had nothing to do it so why be sorry?

I love feedback, can't wait to hear more!

OK, I just found this post of yours, so I decided to shift our thread over here because your post reminded me of some stuff I forgot to mention.

Rose makes it a little worse by teasing him about it and then trying to get him to think about settling down with her. I don't think she was trying to do it, but it didn't seem like a thought that had crossed his mind and I don't think he was any where near thinking "Oh wow, yeah we could share a house".

Heh, yeah, that's what I thought. Aside from, "Well, you already share the TARDIS!" Yeah, I don't really think he was thinking, "What romantic possibilities does this open up for me and Rose?" at that moment.

I think at this point, they really aren't sharing the same thoughts about their relationship. Although, like you said, it's hard to pin down their relationship. I don't know if RTD really had a full plan because their relationship isn't a stable one, it seems. Always differing episode to episode.

Yeah, that seems about right. I don't think it's that great an idea, though. There are some times in season two when I think, "You know, maybe they are just really really good friends." And then there will be something that completely undermines that. I don't know. I think we were spoiled with the lovely Nine/Rose pace.

re the guy that got killed by the Ood:
He was just some random guy that was there.

It seemed weird at first because they went to the trouble of giving everyone else a personality.. but I guess he was just there to demonstrate that the Ood could actually kill people with their little glowy ball things.

What did you think of the characters introduced? I loved the Captain and Ida(the one that went down with the Doctor).

I loved them, too! I love how the guy playing the Captain brought across that reluctance and still determination. And Ida was great, too. I must admit, when I first saw Scooti, I thought, "Oh, she's so going to be the first to die." And then I was thinking, "What kind of a name is Scooti?!" before I realized, oh, this is way in the future and they're on a planet suspended in orbit above a black hole, so that name is not the thing to freak out about. I love that they named someone Ida, though--the only person I know named Ida is someone's grandmother. Maybe it's a more common name in the UK? Or it came back into vogue in whatever century they were in?

Oh, and the laughing kind of annoyed me, too. Much too much laughing in proportion to the amount of dead people. Or at least, too close to the deaths/big tragedies/whatever.

Such a human-loving dork!

I loved that. Although thinking of it now, it kind of really contrasts with Nine's whole "stupid apes" thing. Ten hasn't said that at all, has he?

He lost his TARDIS! [&c.] If it were me, I would be crying, not only because I was stuck but because it was the TARDIS!

I KNOW. And didn't someone explain exactly what happened (TARDIS was on 6, 5-8 were crushed) before they were running to look for the TARDIS? So why was Rose all "what happened?" She can figure out a black hole, but not this.

Which brings another question, when the hell did she get the phone she had in RotC and AoS?

I have no idea, but didn't she give her phone to Mickey in AoS? She's gone through so many phones so far!

I don’t think he needed to say I’m sorry. It’s all in his face how horrible this was, why apologize?

Yeah, I thought that was overdoing it a bit. I liked when he said that in other episodes, but here, it wasn't his fault! If he says "I'm so sorry" all the time, it's going to cheapen the sentiment.

They did an amazing job on the underground cavern. I think I would have been too distracted by what was around me to really find what I was looking for. It’s really amazing. A lost city.

Didn't they? The archaeology nerd in me was dying to explore the place.

No problem shifting the thread. :)

Aside from, "Well, you already share the TARDIS!"

I was watching this episode again, getting caps to make icons, and I watched that scene again. He's freaking out about getting a house "With carpet and doors", he hates the idea of getting a proper house, and than Rose suggests they get one together, it's like he thinks she's okay with settling down with him and that sort of freaks him out. But then, he likes that she doesn't think it's so bad to be stuck with him. He's such an odd puzzle. I really don't want to figure him out though because he's just so tiring.

I think we were spoiled with the lovely Nine/Rose pace.

*whispers* Me too.

Maybe it's a more common name in the UK? Or it came back into vogue in whatever century they were in?

I don't know, it'd be interesting to figure that one out.

Although thinking of it now, it kind of really contrasts with Nine's whole "stupid apes" thing. Ten hasn't said that at all, has he?

He didn't use the "stupid apes" thing that often, did he? But really, he doesn't use it because he hates us or something. And I just went back to read the transcript for that scene with Ten, and he's a bit condescending about it, in my humble opinion. Like he's taking pity that we as humans, let our curiousity take over. With Nine, I always got the feeling that he was just expressing disappointment that we can't figure it out, like a parent. I don't know. I explained it better once.

So why was Rose all "what happened?"

I don't think she was putting it all together. I don't think she really expected what happened, I think she thought there was maybe some damage, but not for the whole section to be gone.

If he says "I'm so sorry" all the time, it's going to cheapen the sentiment.

I always liked how when Nine said "I'm sorry", he always did it in such a personal way. Even if he had nothing to do with it, like Ten here. For example, in "World War III", when he finds that guy that was killed in front of Rose and Harriet Jones, he pulls the guy out of the way into the closet, asks him name, crosses the man's arms and apologizes, and it means something, even if it really wasn't his fault. And of course, when he kisses Gwyneth's forehead and apologizes.

Aha, that's a good point. I can't even figure that out properly--I mean, she did go with the Doctor so she wouldn't have to deal with things like mortgages--so I thought she was just making a joke and got carried away, but then the way the Doctor reacts is like she's serious or something.

But then, he likes that she doesn't think it's so bad to be stuck with him. He's such an odd puzzle. I really don't want to figure him out though because he's just so tiring.

It is a challenge. And it sucks because for so many weird Ten moments I can think, "Oh, bad writing," but then again, he is an alien, so I can't really say that. I've been thinking a lot about the Doctor being an alien, actually. It's an interesting way to deal with a character. Even considering that, it's still hard to really get him, though.

Hmm. I don't know how many times he used it. I think he said it three or four times? I guess that's not that often, but it kind of seemed like it since there are only 13 episodes. I think the parent analogy is a good one. He did sound frustrated. That time in Father's Day, when he and Rose are having their fight, he says it so bitterly, though. I don't know.
Ten does kind of react like Zack & co. are his little pets or something, though. Yeah, I guess that is condescending.

I don't think she was putting it all together. I don't think she really expected what happened, I think she thought there was maybe some damage, but not for the whole section to be gone.

Hmm, OK, I can buy that. It's better than thinking, "Oh, more proof that season two Rose is a bit thick."

I always liked how when Nine said "I'm sorry", he always did it in such a personal way.

Yeah, I love those moments you mentioned, with the guy in World War III and Gwyneth (by the way, I'm excited that actress is going to be in Torchwood) in The Unquiet Dead. Why do I love these moments and yet the one with Ten and Scooti grates, though? I can't quite figure that out. Maybe that was just something CE did better.

So can I go on about how fantastic The Satan Pit was on this thread as well? :)
