DOCTOR WHO
Apr. 29th, 2010 09:29 pmUm...yes, I'll repeat that...Doctor Who.
As in "I watched new!Who today and it didn't have Nine or Ten in it!".
Hello bbs! I am here to make a post because I have watched some newer Who! I haven't actually watched any DW since "Journey's End". Seriously.
I don't actually have a full opinion formed on Matt Smith. His voice is an improvement. I like the look. And he does bring something of his own to the role. But not enough. When watching "The Beast Below", I honestly had flashes of Ten, and it made me itch.
But I do like Eleven, nothing's hitting me about him that is truly turning me off. I feel a bit mean and cynical because CE/Nine pulled me in so freakin' fast, and I let DT/Ten fool me for too long when there were definite things that turned me off since the beginning of his run. I think it's all making me hold back a little, or I'm right and Matt hasn't really owned it as the Doctor yet. But I'm seeing an intensity in places that I am really liking, so that's a plus. I guess I'm getting gonna wait and see. *pouts*
And Amelia Pond. Amy. Oh Karen Gillan's faces! I like her. Adored how she solved the issue in "The Beast Below". I'm still missing a little something from her, but I can't put my finger on what it is, so she's great.
I'm not sure I really cared much about the story in "The Eleventh Hour", but it set up the series, and it introduced Amy in a brilliant manner.
For some reason, TBB really reminded me of "The End of the World". I quite liked it. Although, it did distract me to think that Amy really ran around in her nightie.
So, I'm looking forward to catching up and watching the rest of the series. So...yay!

Date: 2010-04-30 03:19 pm (UTC)I've seen some intensity like Nine in Eleven and I've definitely seen some manic flashes like Ten in Eleven, but not as shrill. He's really developing the role into something of his own - but I don't think he's quite there yet. Hopefully that speeds up though because I'm a little wary.
And wow, WAY TOO SOON to say BEST DOCTAH or BEST SERIES. As you know :D, it'll take a hell of a lot to top my S1 love, and that's not happening yet. But there is great promise in this series...you know, two episodes, lol

Date: 2010-04-30 10:16 am (UTC)THIS! I always felt a bit like a sad Nine fangirl to take so long warming up to the Tenth Doctor, so I tried really hard to keep finding moments in a new episode where I could say he was starting to grow on me. But honestly it was always a struggle and, after watching Matt Smith, I like him so much more already. It's a really interesting contrast compared to how long DT took to find his feet in season 2
And to be fair, I didn't mind DT in seasons 3 and 4 most of the time, but when he was doing comedy and playing it as OT as possible for the kiddies urgh. It got like a panto at times. Matt Smith already seems like a huge improvement on that thankfully. DT just felt like was too aware of being a fan of DW as a child, and he was playing the role of the Doctor for the kiddies. I always thought he was sooo much better when he was just concentrating on more adult drama as in A Human Nature/Family Of Blood where he could actually let himself become the character.

Date: 2010-04-30 03:33 pm (UTC)See, and I never thought it was the Nine fan in me that made me feel like this. Even though I was defensive over it, I felt fine with the idea that Nine was gone and here was Ten. But...I dunno *shrugs*
I think what's really gonna help with Matt Smith/Eleven is the writing. While DT's acting was certainly a part of my problem, the writing was as well, because that's why DT/Ten acted that way.
But yes, even with those moments Matt looks like he's trying to be like DT/Ten, he still has a step above him because I don't think anyone could be as bad as DT was in those moments. So it could get very interesting :)

Date: 2010-04-30 10:25 pm (UTC)No I know what you mean, I was actually pretty positive and excited for DT after his short scene in TPOTW and again in The Xmas Invasion. But then for most of season 2 he just did not work for me at all, and with all the wank going in in fandom over people not immediately embracing DT, I did question whether it was because I was hung up on the Ninth Doctor. But Matt Smith has helped me realise that it was just DT that wasn't working for me :P

Date: 2010-05-03 12:28 am (UTC)I'm not sure how I feel about Amelia either. I go from loving her to being blah. I think she's totally awesome when she's giving the doctor hell, but apart from that, I'm not feeling the spark :(

Date: 2010-05-03 03:41 am (UTC)It actually makes me wonder, were this many people maybe in denial about how they really felt about Ten?
I'm wondering if that's my issue about Amy too. Hmmm...
