Doctor Who
Jul. 24th, 2006 05:52 pmI was re-watching "Father's Day" the other day, capping it to make icons and I realized that I really did watch the show for the Doctor. When you watch an episode like that where it's prominently about someone else, Rose, and you can't help but focus completely on someone else, the Doctor, you know something's up. I'm not surprised of course. I'm really surprised nobody's asked me to stop with these posts though on other communities.
I did a post not to long about about what I like about the 10th Doctor and what I don't like and I touched on the 9th Doctor and Christopher Eccleston and also described what I didn't like about Doctor(9 and 10)/Rose. So, here's the post to better outline my Nine love and a little about what I enjoy about Nine/Rose.
Can I state the whole episode as my fave moment for the Doctor? Because really, he's just love and perfection in this episode. But, okay, absolutely favorite moments have to be the entire sequence when Rose and the Doctor leave her place culminating in his fabulous speech that he just owns. They are both love right then and there. Chris just seems to put every ounce of himself in his roles, and I understand that some people didn't like him as the Doctor, some people thought some of his acting was forced and didn't like some of his choices, that's fine. This is just my opinion and I'm not going around thinking, why do these people not like CE or the 9th Doctor? It's understandable, he's an acquired taste and I'm completely into him. There's so much in this fandom, it's been around for so long that I know it's going to be very hard finding people that share my views, I've been very lucky finding LJ friends that do agree, and I'm eternally grateful.
Also, the argument before they go to the Nestene Consciousness, because Chris plays it wonderfully and a bit like a petulant child when he says "Lots of planets have a north". He's adorable in that episode. Yes, I said a grown man is adorable.

"The End of the World"
I had by heart broken watching this episode because the Doctor is just so lonely and sad becuase his people are gone. It's understandable why he's like that, but we as the audience can't fully comprehend what that means not only because we don't know the details and that our planet hasn't been blown up but because the devastation of the War touched so many and he holds more guilt than we know, and we continually get hints of it, even with Ten in "Doomsday", his guilt and sorrow will be carried with him for a long time. I'm talking out my ass again, sorry.
Anyway, I think my favorite moments here would have to be when he was trying to get by the fans, and he stopped and the music starting to play, it was so beautiful. I know my dad was like, "The hell?" But I was just utterly entranced.
And of course the end, he just looks so old and vulnerable. And I don't mean old in a way like, "OMG, Chris is looking his age", I mean you can see the years the Doctor's been through and the terrible things he's been through.
But then he has Rose to cheer him up, and she's so happy to be there with him.

Aww, look at how she looks at him.

"The Unquiet Dead"
I have come to adore and love this episode on watching it again. I love the look he shares with Rose when the Time War is first mentioned. I think what I really liked about the Doctor in this episode was that he was really hot. I mean, he was hot and handsome in every episode, but it was noticable here for the first time (I at least first noticed it here).
And that beautiful scene that he and Rose share and he tells her "I'm so glad I met you." He really truly is and there's nothing I can say that hasn't been said before.
When he finds that Gwyneth is dead, he takes it so personally because it sort of is his fault, even if she was dead set on saving her "angels". I love that whenever Nine expressed sorrow, he did it in such a personal way, he kissed Gwyneth's forehead and in "World War III", he crossed the arms of the dead secretary(?) when he said "I'm sorry". I'm not saying that Ten doesn't mean it, but sometimes with Ten, it really seems like it's just words.
And I love the end when they're saying goodbye to Charles Dickens. And it amuses me to no end because Rose's facial expressions never match the Doctor's and it seems like Billie just didn't know how the play the scene. Not that I'm insulting her as an actress, it's just hard to figure out her expressions in that particular scene, except when she smiles of course.

"Aliens of London"
Look at him with the kid! It's so random to have him wrestle for the remote and they got one of the cutest kids.
I enjoy his joy when he's praising the human race so much, when he babbles about "stupid apes", it's not because he feels comtempt, he just expresses disappointment when we don't see what's right in front of us, like he's our parent who just wants to see us succeed, and like a parent is disappointed to see us not reach that level.

"The Long Game"
I love Rose's laughter when the Doctor is going on about exploring like when you're in Paris. They seem pretty cocky in this episode, but their relationship here is fun and they are enjoying themselves.
Oh and I love when he goes on his little speech.
I LOVE when he dumps Adam. Yeah, he's a bit sore and harsh about it, but he's right. And I didn't like Adam, I definitely didn't really see him as a "pretty boy" as the Doctor described him..

"Father's Day"
This is another episode where the entire thing is my favorite Nine moment.

Love love love this shot and that he's there completely to hand her hand. I remember saying once that he's there for her to lean on, and vice versa, and it really comes into play with this episode, even if he leaves her at one point. And he has pretty hands.

He gets so angry, I almost felt for Rose when she was talking about anything but what she did.

She really hit him hard with her words, didn't she? Twice, because while it had nothing to do with why he was angry, in any way, shape or form, he kinda doesn't like that he might not be needed as much anymore with her dad alive now, and then she smacks him with her "I know how sad you are", it was just so hurtful. But I couldn't really feel that bad for her, because he didn't really explain what could happen before hand and he just jumped at her with his "stupid ape" comment.

No actual reason for this except that I love the way he walks.

I'm amazed he didn't fall.

I love his joy at being able to yell and tell Jackie what to do.

*huggles my beloved Doctor*

I really liked that he turned away from Rose to look at the baby, and that he looks after the baby.

Just because I love the way she looks at the Doctor in this entire scene.

Don't know why, I love this shot though.

"The Empty Child"
Along with TEotW, this is my other fave episode.
The cat! I hate that it's so dark. I love him with the cat.

I made the following icon to portray one of my favorite scenes in the episode, but it didn't turn out the way I wanted for one and it's too big. Enjoy it anyway.

"The Doctor Dances"
I really don't need to explain what I loved about this, they speak for themselves.

"Boom Town"
I love his joy to begin the episode with, he's so ridiculously happy and it's so infectious.
And then when he and Jack geek over the "surfboard", LOVE.
And he's cute and hot.

And utter perfect in this episode. The episode's only saving grace, in my opinion.
"The Parting of the Ways"
I know what people mean about missing the Ninth Doctor. I still cry when he says he was fantastic.

I love that Rose doesn't even try to crack a smile until he says that he was fantastic as well, then a smile starts to spread on her face and she even nods a little. It's wonderful and perfect. What did you all think about CE as the Doctor? Did you love him and miss him such as I do?
My caps are up for grabs, just throw some credit for the caps my way and don't hotlink, thanks!
Like I've said before, I love that this pairing wasn't explicit. They careda about each other and that was good enough to get acrossed, I as a shipper believed that they were falling in love and others can believe that they just traveled together and cared.
I'd like to know what other people liked or dislike about Nine/Rose, and please share your feelings, if you have any about Ten/Rose. Which did you prefer?
I'm working on the icons that people gave suggestions on, I should have them done soon, but they are really hard since some of them are dark. And I think I'll cap and icon some Ten episodes.
Enjoy!

Date: 2006-07-24 10:32 pm (UTC)I have always admired that he threw himself so entirely into every part; there is utter commitment, even to ugly parts of characters who could be treated much more safely and "sweetly" (Derek Bentley in Let Him Have It and Drew MacKenzie in Hearts and Minds are two very good examples) As the Doctor, that stretched even to being silly, as with the plastic hand in "Rose" (the one and only time I've ever been popped out of the scenario, "OMG, it's Chris Eccleston rolling around with a plastic hand, though he's turning quite a convincing shade of burgundy..."). I always find him compelling and believale as a whole character, and it's something I loved about his Doctor, that he showed such range but it felt like a complete performance. Perhaps that intense commitment is what feels "forced" to some, but I believe him in a way no other Doctor has ever managed to convince me.

Date: 2006-07-24 10:39 pm (UTC)And I love our discussions about CE. When I see more of his work, I'll get to talk about him more with you.
Funnily enough, Gone in 60 Seconds was on last night. I, again, refused to watch it. Even though I kept trying to catch CE and never did. :)

Date: 2006-07-24 10:49 pm (UTC)Nine was my first Doctor but he's also MY DOCTOR, y'know?
You just described my feelings! :)
There was an innocence to their relationship, a certain delicacy that made it beautiful.
I absolutely love the way you put it, it perfectly fits them.
I so far prefer the Ninth Doctor, but it's just a personal preference, but I do adore the Tenth Doctor and have accepted him, long ago because I can into the show about a year after it first aired, but I know the love for Nine, it's overwelming sometimes.
Thank you again for sharing your comment!

So, thanks for your comment and glad you like the caps!

Date: 2006-07-24 11:10 pm (UTC)I'm going to add this bit in, since you like him so much, I'm writing a story that's a cross between Atlantis and Doctor Who, I don't know if you've ever seen SGA, but if you're interested I think you might actually enjoy the series. Let me know if you're interested.
Thank you again for sharing the beautiful pictures as well as the memory of CE.

Thanks again for the comment! And I hope to share many more pictures of the Ninth Doctor and CE.

Date: 2006-07-24 11:58 pm (UTC)That being said, I liked CE's approach to the role. I could detect possible influences from the past... it always felt like the Doctor to me. I think his relationship with Rose was keeping in tradition of the Doctor/companion relationships of the past, *except* for that kiss at the end of PotW. (like, RTD couldn't find any other way of that exchange taking place?) His mannerisms, his speechifying, plus the new aspect of the Time War, all marvelously done.
As has been bantered about in the doctor who community, Ten/Rose never quite felt right. To me, it's a little odd, because Tennant almost feels too young to me (he's the same age as I am!) to be the Doctor! Of course, looking back, Peter Davison was 30 when he took over the role (unless IMDB is wrong, which is entirely possible). But he still had that father-figure kind of feeling to Nyssa (as opposed to we're best college buds (with benefits?) that Ten/Rose has). I'm a bit of a purist -- the Doctor's not supposed to shag his companions... that's Captain Jack's job. =)

Date: 2006-07-25 12:03 am (UTC)I understand people not liking Doctor/Companion relationships (romantically), sometimes I feel like it shouldn't be that way, but I don't have all that history with the Doctor, so that could just be interfering with my views.
I'm a bit of a purist -- the Doctor's not supposed to shag his companions... that's Captain Jack's job. =)
If nothing, I could definitely get behind that!
Thanks again.

Date: 2006-07-25 12:51 am (UTC)All my friends seem to prefer Ten but Nine will always be my preferred and adored Doctor.
One part I love that you didn't mention (and it's so tiny) is in The Unquiet Dead when the Doctor rescues Rose from Zombie people and he keeps his arm around her waist - I just find that so sweet.

Date: 2006-07-25 02:23 am (UTC)And I know that moment from "The Unquiet Dead", I actually pointed it out in one of my screen cap reviews, so I didn't point it out here, but yeah, I found it very sweet as well, just something something they don't even seem to notice.
Nine is also my preferred Doctor.

Date: 2006-07-25 01:27 am (UTC)I credit Christopher Eccleston's portrayal of the Docotor with getting me into this wonderful show in the first place. He had me hooked by that speech in "Rose" you mention, and it only got better from there. I'm sorry he wasn't around very long.
I'm catching up with old Doctors now, and I love them too, but I think that if Nine hadn't been so wonderful, and if that whole season didn't do such a good job of teaching newbies like me about the Doctor and the whole story, I wouldn't have been interested in seeking out more once I was done watching his season. Nine was intense when he needed to be, goofy when he needed to be, intelligent, snarky, loving. Really exactly how the Doctor should be, and I'm glad he was my first. :-)

Date: 2006-07-25 02:33 am (UTC)Like many I was first introduced to Doctor Who, and consequently, Christopher Eccleston, by way of the Sci Fi Channel. And yes, I was slowly falling for the Doctor during his "Who I am" speech and I didn't hit rock bottom until the very end when he asks Rose to come with him. I couldn't turn away from this show after that. Amazingly enough, I continued to adore the doctor through each episodes like The End of the World, Dalek, Father's Day, Doctor Dances, Parting of the Ways (just to name a few of course.) Dalek was my favorite CE episode because I got to learn more about him as the Doctor and what he went through in the Time War. CE's performance was just "Fantastic."
The dynamic between Rose and Ninth Doctor was again that kind of relationship where it went from friends to romantic love and I love that. I completely agree with the comment that CE is "an aquired taste" aand I'm so happy to have had the pleasure of seeing him as the Doctor and calling him "My Doctor."
When I told my roommate about the regeneration scene and showed her a picture of David Tennant she was like "oh he (david)'s cute, you'll get over it..." but... I kept trying to explain that CE is my first Doctor that he'll forever be my first doctor and he's a tough actor to replace. Still she said that it would be ok... and it was... sort of. I got hooked on the Tenth Doctor and although he may have reached CE's level, in a sense, he hasn't necessarily surpassed him and probably never will because his characterization of the Doctor is so different from CE's.
I personally prefer ... tough decision... both 9/Rose and 10/Rose... reasons for which have been explained throughout the previous comments.
"I think Nine and Ten are on a more equal footing in my heart now, but just when I think Ten has taken over, someone like you comes along to remind me why I fell in love with Nine." - House_kitten (sorry don't know how to use the quote function just yet)
Yep, exactly how I feel at times. ^_^ It's great to see others who share the same interests.

I have nothing against 10/Rose, I can like them quite a bit, but 9/Rose will always be my preference for reasons beyond my own comprehension. :)
So nice to find those that share interests!

Date: 2006-07-26 02:46 am (UTC)I came into the fandom knowing nothing about previous incarnations or the show (except that there was one Doctor that wore a scarf) and by catching TEotW late at night by chance, after my sister told me they aired the show on latin american cable.
That one ep was enough to hook me up. And I believe the biggest appeal for me was CE as the Doctor. He made care so deeply about the show and the character. When he smiled, I smiled; when he was angry, I felt angry; when he was afraid, I felt his fear. I remember seeing pictures of Daleks before seeing them on tv and thinking there was nothing scary about them. But then seeing Nine terrified hit me. By the time he regerates, I am in tears and when he says his last words, I just found myself smiling.
He was such a compelling character too: the grief and the sense of wonder all rolled into one. He was intense but could be illy and adorable and that drew me in. I really like Ten and I enjoy his Doctor, but is not as compelling as Nine was for me.
On the shipping I prefer Nine/Rose. I specially love it because as you say:
"Like I've said before, I love that this pairing wasn't explicit. They careda about each other and that was good enough to get acrossed, I as a shipper believed that they were falling in love and others can believe that they just traveled together and cared."
That's exactly how I feel about it. You can take their relationship any way you like and it works beautifully.
and this just reminds I really wanna CE's other roles *makes note to go to rental place tomorrow*

Oh, I know! I was crying my eyes out, yet smiling so much because he really was fantastic.
Nothing in your comment to disagree with!
Reminds me as well to see CE's other role. I've only seen him in one other movie, and it wasn't a movie I would normally watch, I was lucky it was on TV!

Date: 2006-08-09 08:29 pm (UTC)As far as Nine/Rose.. I don't really consider myself a shipper, but the relationship was definitely there and it made me happy. I love how it developed through the season--rather than just clunking along like a typical TV drama relationship, it's full of these little unique & intimate moments. I really love all the hand holding--it's so simple, yet beautiful, and unexpected. And all the other moments--like in The Unquiet Dead when Nine says, "I'm so glad I met you." I wasn't expecting that at all and it was just amazing.
Oh, and I pretty much agree with what you said about Father's Day (This is another episode where the entire thing is my favorite Nine moment). He's just so perfect in that, and I love how he's so concerned about Rose. I love that moment when he comes running up shouting "Rose!" after he discovers the Tardis is just a police box, and she turns and she's smiling like "I knew he'd come back for me." And then I love when that couple in the church asks him to save them--I was almost expecting him to snap at them or something, since he was trying to figure out a solution then, but it just turns into this wonderful, beautiful moment. Also, when he's talking to baby Rose and Rose comes over and they both apologize--I love that. I love how the show avoided typical relationship "oh we're in a fight drama" there because there was a bigger problem.
I love the Empty Child/Doctor Dances arc so much, but I'm not going to ramble about that for now. But that scene when she asks him to dance when they're alone, and he's all, "Rose, I'm trying to resonate concrete," pretending to concentrate on that.. I can't describe that scene as well as just watching the scene can, but I love it. And the dancing at the end, of course.
The last episode is so sad! I was pretty much crying from the part when he sends her back to the present and she's panicking and that hologram message thing of him pops up. I mean, I knew that was CE's last episode and everything, but I really got attached to Nine while watching the show, more than I realized. Ah, so sad.
What do you think of the "I think you need a doctor" line? The first time I heard it, I was cringing because of the general cheesiness, but I've watched it since and it doesn't bother me now. CE pulls it off, somehow. I love the way he says, "Come here" just before that. So intense.
And, rewatching the last episode since--the part when he's all "Rose Tyler, you're a genius!" and pretending to have come up with some clever solution--that bit is so sad, watching it now and knowing what's coming. I love how he kisses her on the forehead there, knowing it's the last time he might ever touch her.
Ha, well, this is the longest comment ever apparently! But would you mind if I added you? I'd be interested to read more of your thoughts on Doctor Who as I catch up with the second season :)

Date: 2006-08-09 08:48 pm (UTC)What do you think of the "I think you need a doctor" line?
It just makes me giggle, because I think the line was only written because it had to be in there somewhere, he's the Doctor, of course he's gonna use it at some point! But I liked it, because his whole demeanor changes, he's going to save her and he's confidant in himself again. He's going to save this girl he cares about so much.
I love the way he says, "Come here" just before that.
Me too.
I love how he kisses her on the forehead there, knowing it's the last time he might ever touch her.
Oh I know! Second and so forth viewings, it hurts because we know what's happening now. And it sucks because he has to live with the fact that the last time she saw him, he was tricking her and she has that for her last memory of him. But then, she comes back :)
But would you mind if I added you? I'd be interested to read more of your thoughts on Doctor Who as I catch up with the second season :)
Please, add! I'll be making plenty of Doctor Who posts, from season one and two.
