Sigh. Yes. I have that experience, too. The only time I've ever ended up with the mainstream of the fandom, it was a waaay subversive reading of the show (which has now become kind of popular, and I don't see it any of the other combinations!).
Let's just say we're "discerning" viewers, shall we?
I hate being in the minority. I know it doesn't matter, but I'm a sucker for love. I need to be loved and I need to feel integrated. I'm all the contrary in real life. I'm always in the minority so I guess that's why I need to be in the majority in fandoms.
But I wouldn't give too much thoughts to the minority/majority thing if I were you. There are LOTS and LOTS people in real life that don't post on LJ and forums. LOTS and LOTS of people who think like you. You're not so much in the minority.
I think the fact that FANDOM is a minority in each viewing audience is a huge comfort. But still, I don't interact with those people, I'm involved in fandom.
Actually, what really gets to me, is when I'm reading something, like someone's review, and I'm stuck wondering if we're watching the same damn show!

I sometimes have the same impression. But I think it's funny. We're watching the same thing but we don't actually see the same thing. It makes you realize how people can be so different.

I hate that. But I'm also used to it, because it's happened to me with the X-files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Battlestar Galactica... I could go on, but you get the point. Doesn't make it any less aggravating, though.
